The Outrigger Waikoloa is lovely, the setting is on "A" Bay, with a postcard-beautiful beach setting. And it's very Hawaiian, more authentic than most of the super-luxurious hotels in that area, although I'm not knocking those.......I just feel this hotel makes you feel as though you're really in Hawaii!

Hi, I've stayed at the hotel many, many times over the years & always had a wonderful stay. We lived on the Big Island so it was very accessible. We also vacationed there before moving to Big Island & it was one of the best vacations ever. It has changed quite a bit since then (1985). We have not been there since the reno, hear it is incredible compared to before...so you should really have a wonderful place to stay.
There are lots of things to do in the area, wonderful hotels nearby with good restaurants, great golf courses, etc. The best restaurant is CanoeHouse at Mauna Lani (10 min away)..expensive, but remember you aren't paying for the hotel. Also at Kawaihae is Cafe Pesto's, very good, be sure to try the creme brulee. In Waimea is Edelweiss, a favorite with locals, and me. German food, choose from the specials list. It does close sometime in Sept tho for a few weeks..so check to see if it is open. We used to eat lunch there, as it was a very good meal & cheap.
Drive up to Waimea & turn left on the road to Hawi (rt 25 or 250) thru the mts to end of road...turn right at dead end & you'll end up at Polulu Point. Then drive back along the ocean...my favorite drive. You should see Maui & perhaps Molokai in the distance from Hawi.
Be sure to spend good time at the Volcano...think about spending a night there if you can find a room...you will not forget it ever. Great time to be there. Have a great trip. Aloha, Linda
