Outlet in KC?
Hi there, i am attending a conference 24-29/9 in Kansas City and would like to know if there is a good outlet in the surroundings. I want to get clothing for my kids 1 and 3 years old and some sporting gear and clothing for myself. I'll be staying at the Westin Crown Center. Look forward to hear from you. Kindly Jacob from Stockholm, Sweden

Hello! You'll enjoy Kansas City--it's a beautiful place and that is a beautiful time of year to visit.
Could you clarify what you mean by "outlet"? In the states, "Outlet Stores" are lower priced stores that sell items that are from last season or slightly imperfect, or just not suited for a regular store. If that is what you are looking for, there aren't really any good options IN Kansas City. However, if you are just looking for good shopping opportunities (at regular stores), there are many to choose from. There is actually a mall IN Crown Center, but it doesn't have great stores. Just a few minutes away, though, is the "Country Club Plaza" that has many clothing and home stores--ranging from affordable (like The Gap) to upscale (like Saks 5th Ave). It's an outdoor shopping area that is just beautiful to visit and stroll through.
A little further away are Oak Park Mall--a LARGE shopping mall with many many stores, and "Town Center Plaza", which is another outdoor shopping center. It has many of the same stores as the Country Club Plaza, but also has a great Sporting Goods store called Galyan's. Since you are looking for sporting gear, it might be worth a visit. That area is probably 30 minutes from your hotel, though.
If you have more questions, let me know!

Doesn't Independance MO have an Outlet Mall (what is the name of it Tangers or something like that)? To me..that Olathe Big Mall or whatever it is called is an outlet mall. I agree that the Plaza for shopping would be awesome. Being at the Plaza is like being in Europe to me. Way cool. I also like Town Center Plaza (119th/ Nall in Leawood)..and what about that cute little area in Prairie Village off of Mission?
I like to shop at Gary Gribble's for my sporting goods. I'm a runner and I'm picky about where I buy my stuff. Gaylons is neat for sporting things (found in Town Center Plaza).

The closest outlet mall is the Great Mall of the Great Plains off I-35 in Olathe at the southwest corner of the metro area. The same direction as the shopping travelisfun mentions, but a bit farther.
The largest sporting goods store is the enormous Cabela's Retail Showroom near I-435 & I-70 at the west side of the metro area. It has 188,000-square-foot of showroom (approximately 4 acres).
Unless you have a rental car, none of those are good options.
If you are relying on public transportation from the Westin, you are pretty much limited to Crown Centre & the Country Club Plaza. They have mostly more expensive shopping options.
I have found some good buys in good men's clothes at Hall's department store in Crown Plaza.

The closest (probably 30-40 minutes from where your staying) is the Mall of the Great Plains in Olathe, Kansas. It has outlet type stores, and you will be able to find kids clothes at Carters, Burlington Coat Factory and a few other stores. Many of the stores have closed, as it doesn't get a whole lot of business. (Not sure if it would be worth the trip)
