Our first trip to Upper New York
Arriving in Buffalo on June 16th and driving to Rochester for the night. Then we will be driving to Corning the next day and planning to visit the glass museum there before leaving for Ithaca for overnight. The next day looking around Ithaca before heading to Cooperstown area and visiting the baseball hall of fame that evening (I believe its open until 9 p.m.). The next day driving to Lake Placid. Are we going to far too fast?
The rest of the trip will be more leisurely from Cooperstown we will spend two nights in Lake Placid and two nights each in Montreal, Kingston and Toronto before returning to Niagara Falls and Buffalo for return home?
Are we crazy? Or will this work?

I'm not a baseball fan but even baseball fans who've mentioned the Hall of Fame seem to indicate that you can do justice to it in a couple hours. Other than the Farmer's Museum and Glimmerglass Opera (if there's a performance that night or weekend), I don't think there's much in the C'town area although it's a quaint small town surrounded by beautiful countryside. If you arrive in Buffalo early enough I'd strongly encourage you to visit Letchworth State Park on the way to Rochester (it's only a few miles out of your way). The scenery there is incredible - really one of the most beautiful parks in the entire eastern US but little known by folks outside the upstate/northern NY area. I agree that two days may be a bit too long for Kingston - great town but if it was me I'd opt for three days in Toronto or Montreal and cut back Kingston by a day. It is a fair amount of driving but you'll be traveling through some beautiful parts of the state and it will be well worth the time taken to visit. Get to Home Dairy on the Ithaca Commons early in the AM and get some of their sticky buns for breakfast - they are the best anywhere!!!

KH - how badly do you want to see Corning/Elmira and Cooperstown? It sounds like you're cramming a lot in. Unless Corning and Cooperstown are "must-sees" for you, you would be better off taking a different route.
Another question - are you not planning on spending time in Niagara Falls? You mention flying in and out of Buffalo, but not necessarily spending time in Niagara. (I could help you better if I knew the answer to that).
Lake Placid, Montreal, Toronto, and Niagara Falls are great destinations. I would spend most of my time in those places. However, there are many places between Buffalo and Lake Placid worth visiting that aren't as out of the way as Corning and Cooperstown, such as Letchworth State Park and the Finger Lakes. You may want to take your time driving through the Adirondacks instead of Ithaca and Cooperstown.
Hope this helps. Sounds like a great trip.

Thanks for the information! We do not have solid plans yet between leaving Rochester the morning of June 17th and arriving in Montreal on June 21st. So what would you all recommend we do or go the nights of the 17, 18, 19 and 20 before our hotel reservation in Montreal? We do have one night in Niagara Falls Canada on June 27th plus a full day there before heading to the Buffalo airport at 4:30 a.m. on June 29th
.
I had though about Letchworth Park and staying more northerly through New York on our way to Montreal? Is it easy to get reasonable hotels/motels etc. without reservations that time of the year?
June is tourist season in the midwest, but when we were in New England it was pretty dead this time of year, is it true for New York?

I suggested skipping Corning and Cooperstown mainly because it's a LOT of driving and seemed out of the way from the rest of your trip. However, if you have the time and you want to see these places, then by all means go for it. Or, you can take the more northerly route by going to Letchworth (one day), then the Finger Lakes (pick one or two lakes to drive around for one or two days). Now that I think about it, it's a lot of driving no matter what you do! No matter where you end this leg of your trip (Finger Lakes or Cooperstown) drive up through the Adirondacks and spend 2 days like you originally wanted to do.
Like another poster said, I would add on a day in Montreal. Then drop the two days in Kingston and spend one day in the 1,000 islands. Then on to Toronto and Niagara Falls. (Or, don't add on a day to Montreal and add one day on to Niagara Falls). There are a lot of things to do in the Niagara Falls area, but you would need more than one day.
June should be beautiful and warm. The grammar and high schools for the most part don't finish up until the 3rd week of June, so I think you'll miss the crowds by a week or two. Sorry, I can't help you with hotels. I've been to all these places (just not in one trip) and it sounds like a wonderful vacation. You will be amazed at the beauty of New York State and Montreal and Toronto are wonderful cities. Have a great time.
