Other Manhattan Hotels
I am a NY'er so I do not stay at hotels here. But as I walk around I see new hotels sprouting up in Chinatown, the Lower East Side, and the East and West 20's but I never see them recommended here.
Friends from Spain are coming for Christmas week, and I would like to suggest something besides the hotels in midtown, the Beacon, and avoid LIC if possible.
Any experience in other hotels?
Thank you.

We loved the hotel mulberry in Chinatown. Rooms spacious, beds comfortable, very reasonable, very quiet, T'ai Chi in the park across the street in the morning. Free on street parking on weekends.
Bad breakfast included at nearby coffee shop.

How about Chelsea...We have stayed at Chelsea Pines Inn twice and it is a three-minute walk to a great subway station that connects all over the city. Most of the guests we've met there have been from out of the country. Hopefully your friends will have better luck navigating the subways than direction- impaired me. The hotel rooms are a little quirky, but they work. Good continental breakfast. Nice staff.

A caveat to my last post...I see they have changed their ownership since we were there in November, and the reviews have been less than stellar, so I guess I will take away that recommendation. If true, too bad, because you can't beat the location.

There are a lot. The Hotel on Rivington is not new at all and is great. As is the Crosby Street Hotel. If they want to splurge, the Bowery Hotel is very nice. There are also several chain hotel. There's a Comfort Inn on the Ludlow, but I don't have any direct knowledge of it.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will pass them along.
Every year I read how expensive Christmas week is, and when I just ran cursory look on Booking.com, they were insane.
Their daughter is doing a semester at Boston College, so they want to see NY together. She is extraordinary kid, she walked the 500 mile Camino when she was 11 and has already worked for an NGO.

One UN Plaza , a Millenium Hotel is opposite the UN, 44th St,/ 1st and 2nd Avenues, short walk to transportation options at Grand Central Terminal. Knockout sweeping city views in every direction. It is always full of European tourists. Pool with expansive city views.
Way back, when UN Plaza was first built, 1980s, it was a Park Hyatt, Quietest hotel in city as rooms start on around 35th floor. They often have incredible deals and if interested in booking, join their loyalty club for a percentage off room rate. Book didectly with Milennium Hotels website to get that deal.
Look at Maritime Hotel on 9th Ave in West Chelsea. Great location, restaurants, Chelsea Mkt., Highline, etc.
Christmas week in NYC is outrageous while Chicago's hotels' prices drop, can't figure it out. Good luck helping them out.Their daughter will love Boston too.

A friend who stayed at the Comfort Inn on Ludlow said the street noise out front was loud--lots of barhoppers.
Good rates are often available at Holiday Inn Lower East Side on Delancey, a neighborhood in transition. Friends did not complain about traffic noise. This hotel also has rooms with two double beds which can be hard to find.

Look at Cosmopolitan on Chambers St, far west. When my mother was in the senior living center nearby, across from Stuyvesant HS, a lot of the relatives visiting the elders would stay there. It is not fancy like the Bowery Hotel.

Thanks Thursday and El.
As noted at the top, there are so many new hotels springing up around the city and rarely are they mentioned. Granted most are not in the middle of tourist areas, but the people who posted here, know how easy it is to navigate Manhattan.
Has anyone stayed at Hotel 17 on East 17th between First and Second? It has shared bathrooms, but I understand management keeps the place spotless.
