Oregon + California

Hi,

I am from Brazil. I have a daughter who are living in Oregon for 4 month in a High School Program.
We are going to US to get her in january/2014. We are going to stay until february.
We will begin in Portland and the final point will be Los Angeles.
We have a 20 year old son and a daugther with 17.
I would like to get suggestions of places to know and cities to visit.
It would be nice to have also hotels and transportation suggestions.

Thanks a lot.

And a Happy New Year!

Transportation is driving. You should really get a guidebook to give you a start on organizing this trip.

So many choices/options. Also - be careful about the weather - as you probably have never driven in icy/snowy conditions?

If it is snowy/icy, please take the Amtrak Coast Starlight (train) from Portland south at least as far as Emeryville (San Francisco).
See what you want of San Francisco and then rent a car for the trip south on US 101 and California Route 1 to Los Angeles.
Stay safe if you have little winter driving experience.

You might want to get the Fodor's Guides that cover that area to find out what is of interest to you.

Some highlights of this trip are The Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon Coast from Cannon Beach to Brookings, the redwood forests of northern California, Napa and Sonoma Valley wine districts, San Francisco, Yosemite National Park, and Highway 1 from Monterey to Santa Monica with its many attractions.

Durvaldo,

HTtY gave you the big highlights.

One big question you must decide is if you wish to drive down US101 (a highway) along the Oregon and California coast. The advantage is more beautiful scenery, and also this road is very unlikely to be icy or snowy.

If you wish to make better time, you could instead take I-5, a faster freeway; however, it is possible it could be icy on this freeway in the mountains of Southern Oregon and northern California.

I also recommend a guidebook.
