Orange County trip
I am flying into LAX in November for a 5 day convention in Anaheim. I was hoping to spend a few days relaxing beforehand somewhere within driving distance of LA, then to head somewhere in Orange County for the convention that would be within an hours drive to the convention center. Any suggestions?

Hi Allison--
I'm not sure I followed what you're thinking about, so if I'm off-base, let me know. If you mean to find somewhere to stay while you attend the convention that isn't Anaheim, Newport Beach is close enough and close to other nice places. Although you should try to visit Laguna Beach, I wouldn't recommend commuting from there, as there aren't a lot of roads in or out, so it can be a headache. But Newport works, if you don't mind about a 30 minute drive, plus time to park. (That assumes that you can time your travels to avoid the worst of the traffic!) There are the Hyatt Newporter and a Marriott near Newport Center, and the Portofino Inn on the beach if you like more of a B&B.
There are probably some other ideas-- let me know if I'm on the right track!

Thanks Robin- you were right on track! I initally was going to stay at the Hyatt Newporter for the four nights of the trip but it was sold out. I got a great rate at the Radisson Newport-$139/night so I booked that as a back-up if nothing better comes along. The Sand and Surf and Ritz Laguna Niguel were around $250, which were decent rates but not worthwhile enough since I won't be in the room that much. I am leaning towards staying at the Loews Santa Monica over the weekend before the conference and then staying at the Radisson Newport Beach for the nights of the conference. Is there any other hotels in Newport Beach other than the Hyatt or the Marriot worth checking out? I looked at Portofino Beach(or Bay) Hotel in Redondo Beach but I thought that might be too far from the Anaheim Convention Center.

The Portofino I was referring to is in Newport Beach. Here is their web site:
http://www.portofinobeachhotel.com/
Now I haven't stayed there, but it looks nice, and it's right by the beach. You might want to check about whether it gets noisy-- it is near several restaurants and bars. But since it's no longer summer, things should have calmed down a lot.
I like the Italian restaurant, Renato, that is affiliated with the hotel.
