Optimistic Nantucket traveler

At a restaurant here in Nantucket last week I heard a woman discussing a wedding reception for 170 with a restaurant manager -- for January!!

What are the odds of getting 170 people anywhere in January at the same time with any certainty? Certainly, I had many delays during my winter-in-Florida days.

I can guarantee you that there will be at least 5 days when she can't get to or from Nantucket this January. What would be worse, none of her guests getting here for the wedding or none of them being able to get home? I wonder where they will stay and eat because there are certainly not more than 170 seats available in restaurants on the entire island at that time, and many of them will be in diner-type cafes.

What are people thinking? No doubt, she will have a sad tale to tell of how other people let her down!

Does she live on the island? Then at least some of her guests would be islanders. I think that is a very odd time to plan a wedding on Nantucket. I went to my friend's wedding at The Galley a few years ago. It was fun, fun. She has been living there since the late '90s.

Sure she was optomistic..she's a bride to be
I remember my mother when I said I wanted a December wedding in Boston - and what first came out of her mouth- ice, snow, travel delays....coats, boots.....- but I was optomistic too - and lucky -
the snow was flurries, everyone came in a day earlier and all was well - once the hotel union decided finally, the day prior, not to strike after all !
(Yikes almost makes me hope my kids elope!)

I know it can be harder getting to Nantucket in winter -but then again someone I know was getting married there this year, just when all those cape Air flights went on hiatus for a day for that big safety check - lots of scrambling from Logan and on ferries for her wedding guests too - and who would have thought for a June wedding !

we'll all keep our fingers crossed for a mild January...and that she has thought ahead and rented lots of houses or something !

Depends on who she is. If she's famous, she can get 1,700 to the island...

Wasn't the whole Island iced in with no ferry service for about a month in a recent January (I think it was maybe 2004)? I don't know if I would risk it....but then the restaurant is probably very happy to accommodate her! Although, I can't imagine having a wedding reception at the restaurants that I know about that are open that time of year.
