Opinions on Atlantis

Thinking of going to Atlantis or Key Largo this year. What's Atlantis like? Is it overrated, overpriced?

I haven't been, but my sister went last year and said the food was really expensive. I have heard this many times as well, they have like 20 gourmet restaurants. Also, depending on when you go, the place is a magnet for families-kids everywhere. Key Largo would probably be better suited if you are traveling as a single or couple but the Bahamas are rugrat heaven! Most Caribbean islands don't cater to families but that one does. If you have kids then it would be a fabulous choice.

Yes it's overpriced but I wouldn't say it's overrated. It's sort of like Vegas in the Caribbean (yes, I know, Bahamas technically isn't the Caribbean), an over-the-top expansive property with pools, waterslides, shops and restaurants galore. The underground aquariums alone make it worth a visit. Remember that there are 3 levels of lodging -- Beach Towers (the cheapest), Coral Towers (middle), and Royal Towers ("luxury"). Coral is perfectly acceptable and not only the middle price-wise, but also middle of the grounds. I'd skip Beach.

Although you are "encouraged" to eat the expensive on-property food, there are options -- a few restaurants in other parts of Paradise Island and The Poop Deck, on the other side of the Paradise Island bridge.

Go for it. You can go to Key Largo anytime.

Why would you skip Beach Towers? Also, what's the scoop about staying in teh Comfort Suites and using Atlantis privileges?

We love the Atlantis. It is an incredible property. It's worth going just to walk around all the grounds and the aquariums. People keep saying how expensive the food is, but it seems to be the same as any other up-scale resort. As a previous poster said, you're not obligated to eat at the Atlantis restaurants. In fact, the first time we went, we got the gourmet meal plan. The other times we've gone, we did not get the meal plan and spent a lot less money.
If you stay at the Comfort Suites (across the street), you get full access to all the Atlantis facilities.
The water slides, lazy river ride, beach, aquariums, etc are all incredible.
