Opinions appreciated: which side of the planes for best island views?
Hello all -
My thanks to all of you as I have learned a lot on these boards while looking into my own Hawaii vacation plans!
My question is regarding airline seat reservations. My fiance and I won't be doing a helicopter tour while we are there, as we don't have the stomachs for them, so we're hoping to maximize our aerial views with each of the plane rides.
Any thoughts are appreciated for "right side of plane or left side" on the following flight patterns:
1. Dallas to Maui (OGG)
2. Maui (OGG) to Kauai (LIH)
3. Kauai (LIH) to Honolulu (HON)
4. Honolulu (HON) to Dallas
MAHALO!

Mark99 hit the nail on the head...surface winds dictate which runway is used for landing, so unless you know for sure which way the wind will be blowing as your plane maneuvers for landing there is no sure way to know which side is "best."

Sitting on the right hand side of the plane will likely give you a view of Wailea, Kihei areas as you approach. On one flight coming from the mainland we flew around West Maui and those on the left side of the plane could see the Lahaina / Kaanapali areas but on another trip the plane flew over central Maui and circled out over Molokini. I assume if the trades aren't blowing you might just fly strsight in to Kahalui and there wouldn't be much to see at all.
Maui to Lihue I haven't done.
Lihue to Honolulu I would sit on the left side as you will see the south coast of Oahu as you approach HNL and normally if you are sitting on the left as you leave you will see a good view of Waikiki.

HNL to Maui ---- AB
Mui to HNL ---- CD
Make sure on the way to muai you have your cam ready...if it is clear you will get an amazing view of Diamond Head crater, and especially Hanauma Bay on your way up to 29,000!
PS - sorry folks for all my spelling mistakes through my posts...between my dyslexia and my coffee enhanced keyboard it is tough slugging some days!
