I'm asking again in case anyone has come across anything lately.... A few years back I heard of a program a large car rental company used to move cars to high demand locations and then back. Example.... Budget moved cars from the Philadelphia area to Orlando in early May. Budget now has their employees do that. Anyone familiar with anything similiar. Just looking for a road trip but the rates to go one way are ridiculous. Ideally, we want to go from the NYC area to Florida. But open to options. Thanks!!

I've definitely see the one-way charges vary widely for US car rentals depending on the season and direction. If you have some flexibility, definitely try getting the quote for each direction, and for several of the large companies. It's also possible that if you get the quote too far in advance, they will just quote a relatively high drop charge because they don't have the picture of where they'll have too many cars yet.

curmudgeon - The OP is not wanting to rent a car for a one way trip; they are wanting to relocate a car for a rental company. It is done as a service for the rental car company, to move cars to busier locations [from drop offs of previous, one way rentals]. This is done free of charge, for the driver it means driving for free from point A to B. I am not sure who pays for gas etc.

The problem is that summer is high season in New York - since many locals with beach or country houses rent a car every weekend to get there. The market here doesn't really slow down until October. (I know, I've been renting a car to take several people out to NJ a couple of times recently - and they're not New York cars - the license plates are from all over.)
