Oh, wow, this depends on so many factors -- car? $$$? Interests???
With absolutely no info, I'd say Century City -- close to everything on the Westside, fine to walk around solo at night, and if no car, relatively decent public transportation or taxi options.

We loved this place.

It does depend on your budget. Look at Tripadvisor for sure.
Have fun!

Well, as long as we have nothing to go on, I'll suggest my hometown luxury hotel:

Safe town, no car needed, lots of shopping and restaurants.

If you are thinking beach, consider the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza in Redondo. Across the street from the beach. Walking distance to the pier and downtown Redondo for shops and restaurants. 15 minutes from LAX.
If you are thinking Hollywood, the Rennaisance is a stylish hotel in walking distance of shopping and restaurants. 15 minute drive from Beverly and Century. The comedy clubs are 5 minutes away.

Not knowing budget or likes, I'd suggest Inn at Playa del Rey, not far from LAX. Safe, near restaurants and beach.
