But my point was that the Travel/Portland website prices are HIGHER than any of the hotels' own websites for the SAME dates.

NeoPat,
I just flew home from Portland and also stopped in at Mothers for breakfast. It is very shabby chic, but that is also part of the Portland vibe in my opinion. There food is okay but the people there are friendly and our service was great.

IMHO, there is another restaurant around the corner from Mothers that is much better called the Bijou Cafe (at 132 SW Third Ave. 503-223-3187). The Bijou is a few doors away from one of my favorite coffee shops in Portland called Stumptown Roasters.
And if you are up in the NW neighborhood - you can't miss St. Honore Boulangerie.
I miss Portland already.

The Bijou has always been great. Really has kept a high standard of quality through the years. It's a treat and would be worth checking out as an alternative to Mother's. Though I do understand how the ritual and tradition beckons. I have a similar compulsion to go to the Alpine Cafe in Bend, OR no matter how many alternatives people have told me to check out.

How is the fresh salmon hash with poached eggs at the Bijou? That's something I can't get at home -- the MAIN reason for going to Mother's.

Yes, and the other reason is your memories - I say go for it. Mothers of the world unite! I wish we had a Bijou and a Mother's in my home town. Portland is lucky to have both.

I tried to search for a Bijou menu but didn't find one. Did find this review site:
http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Over...spx?RefID=1757
oyster and halibut hash mentioned.
Save it for another trip...
I'm the one who should go check it out. I was whining on another thread about not having gone out for breakfast in so long.

Halibut hash? Oyster hash? Hmmm. I may get talked out of Mother's after all. I need a great send-off breakfast before driving alone to Ashland!

Meanwhile I bid to $55 for 4star Priceline with no luck. Will wait a while as it's still 7 weeks or so off.

nanabee--We also have Lorn & Dotties for great breakfasts too. It is a block or so from Mother's, and really good!

Kennedy School!! We stayed there last August, it was so much fun! Can't remember how close it is to downtown (we had a car). We ate at the restaurant there for dinner and enjoyed it. I highly recommend it!

mms- will put that on my growing list of restaurants. I will be in PDX again in about 10 days! Will report back.

rdg703- I've eaten many breakfasts at the Kennedy School as my daughter's house was a block away. I loved to walk over with my 3 yr old granddaughter and sit in the patio on a nice day. It's a great place if you love off the wall art and decorations! Very fun.
Kennedy School Hotel is across the river from downtown in the NE section of Portland. If you are in that area, I also recommend The Tin Shed at 1438 NE Alberta (503) 288-6966on Alberta Street for breakfast too. For great coffee, I also like Extracto Roasters, 2921 NE Killingsworth Street (503-281-1764).

Yeah, Kennedy School is not close to downtown. It's one of a chain of unique pubs run by McMenamins, a local institution, probably something all visitors to Portland should visit at least once to experience some local culture. Some of their properties like Kennedy School are large and have movie theaters, restaurants, even hotel rooms. (The Edgefield in Troutdale - gateway to the Gorge - is similar to the Kennedy school but on a much larger property).

If you can't make it to the Kennedy School, you can find much smaller McMenamins pubs all over Portland without going to Kennedy School. In NW Portland for example there are at least four of them, including the Ram's Head (NW 23rd and Hoyt) and the Blue Moon (NW 21st and Glisan). The Mission Theater on NW Glisan is a McMenamins theatre/pub (2nd-run movies for $3, eat/drink alcohol too).

Andrew, I agree, McMenamins are places all visitors should experience at least once. I mentioned it way up on this thread, but you expanded much more on it than I did. I also really like that McMenamins gives back so much to the local communities.

The Kennedy School is fun to explore and we enjoyed eating at the brew pub there. If you will be in Ashland on the weekend, there is an art fair in the area close to the Shakespeare theater that was also quite good.

I thought I would add one more breakfast restaurant to this thread. Not cheap, but if I didn't have to consider money this would probably be my first choice in Portland. The Heathman Hotel. Breakfast here is a beautiful experience in part due to a lovely eggs benedict, but also with the nice tablecloth, heavy flatware, good coffee, fresh squeezed juice, and pleasant staff. An indulgence morning.
I think I feel one coming on.

The Jupiter Hotel on East 8th and Burnside is cool and fun.
The Doug Fir is a happening bar, restaurant and concert venue on site.
The Jupiter has an "after midnight" rate of 59 dollars plus tax making it the best deal going.

Have breakfast at Simpatica or Screendoor. (weekends only) They will both be busy. Come early and expect to wait but also to have THE BEST breakfast Portland has to offer.

McMenamins are a joke. Anyone with half a lick of sense will tell you that. Service is notoriously poor and the food is garbage, often served lukewarm or cold.

"The Jupiter has an "after midnight" rate of 59 dollars plus tax making it the best deal going."

Well, a deal to one person is not a deal to another. Not being able to check into my hotel until after midnight when I'm going to be leaving by 8 AM is NOT a good deal for me -- even if they only charge $5.90. But then I guess people checking in after midnight aren't there to sleep anyway.

One look at Trip Advisor and WOW! Review after review -- "worst hotel experience ever", "big disappointment caused by slick marketing", and "a coke head hotel". What would one expect from a motel that has loud music around a fire pit in the parking lot, provides condoms in every room, and offers a sex shop in Room 117? In fact, what would one expect from any motel that encourages rentals after midnight? Not a place to sleep no doubt.

Avoid_Kauai, thanks for the tip, but it is clearly not a place I'd stay if they paid me -- and no, I don't consider myself a prude, but not a place to go get a good night's rest and sleep -- clearly. Now if I were looking for a place to shack up with whomever I had picked up in that "happening" bar -- well, it might be just about perfect.

But I guess I should agree that the Doug Fir is indeed a "happening place". Here's the partial review from the "Bar Fly" website:

". . .or the ever-mobbed, sorta-disgusting pick-up scene above ground. The picturesque coziness of the ski-chalet-chic surroundings attracts their share of older groups, of course, but, blame the absence of cigarettes or preponderance of adult-contemporary acts or partnership with adjoining Jupiter Motel (where most every touring artist stays these days, sometimes for well after the show), the crowds tend towards a Beavertonian-Cosmo-cologne monied sleaze."

Hmmm. Makes me want to hurry right over!

Neo, I definitely do NOT see you at the Doug Fir, lol!

AvoidKauai--Funny, we have always had good service at McMenamins. Granted their food is not gourmet by a long shot, but it is good pub food. Have you ever stayed at one of their hotels?

Well, mms, at least the Jupiter is an "equal opportunity" no tell motel. The website even suggests that the after midnight special for a room is for that "her OR him" that you meet.
