I don't think the changes at the lake are for the better. The developement at Incline is horrible. The old lake front houses are going too. The aren't remodeled anymore but are just torn down and some huge monstrosity is built on the property. I lot of dot.com and drug money built many of the houses up there.
I just saw an article in the paper yestderday that the "top end" housing market is still very strong up at the lake. These are the multi-million dollar places. Not sure who is doing the buying. The mid-market..like condos and the half million dollar places are the ones not selling.
I don't go up there a lot anymore. I had a friend, from my youth, that lived in Dollar Point. Her family money came from Dollar Steamship Line so seemed appropriate for her to live at Dollar Point. They were the ones that had the Chris Craft. She got divorced and the house was way too big so she moved down to Grass Valley. She was tired of the snow also I think. She still had the boat and entered it in the Concourse every year. That boat was a classic for sure, all teak.
I go up every now and then and have lunch with people I know, or sometime I have a job up there and will take the day and do some window shopping OR sometimes real shopping, but it's just not the same.
My ex and I and friends would go up for the day often on the weekends. We'd go around the Sand Harbor area but would park along the road and hike down to the rocks along the shore and picnic and swim. I don't think they let you park along the road anymore. It was nice because it was quiet and private and some of the rocks are huge and very flat so were great to sit on or lay out on. We went to the beach sometimes, but it of course was always hugely crowded by the early afternoon. I didn't like that so much.
I often fly over the lake when going down to the Bay Area and I can see the silt streaming into the lake at the south shore end. You used to be able to see 100 feet down and now it's about 60 feet so I find that very disturbing. A couple of years ago a contractor doing excavation broke a sewer line at Kings Beach and I don't know how many gallons of raw sewage spilled into the lake before they could repair it. There were people at Incline, up on the hillsides that topped the trees that blocked their view of the lake. They didn't care. So, pay the fine, no big deal.
So, there are things about the changes that are disturbing...some call it progress.

Enough that it kept us out of the lake the whole time we were there!
We still love the lake and the whole area, but agree that the it is paying the price for development.
Pildredge, loved those old pictures. I scrolled through them to see places we've stayed over the years -- the old Brockway, the old Tahoe Tavern, etc. Good times!
