Old Sacramento - lodging

Need somewhere for a Sunday night....Any ideas? Don't want to stray to far or pay a fortune. Thanks, Linda

The closest reasonable motel to Old Sac is the Vagabond Inn which is only about a block from one entrance - definitely within walking distance. The Holiday Inn is across the street from the Vagabond Inn and on the other end of Old Sac is the Embassy Suites (but that is a lot more expensive). Sacramento hotels are pretty full on weekdays due to State Goverment/business travelers. But on a Sunday night you should be able to get really good rates at even the 4 star places (Hyatt, Sheraton, Embassy, etc.)

The Sandman (mentioned above) is in a "motel row" area off Richards Blvd just north of Old Sac off I-5. But they are not within walking distance.

I live in Sacramento. Don't stay in any hotels on Richard's Blvd - it's hideous. Try the higher ends mentioned above for a good weekend deal or the Best Western Sutter House on H Street.

Let me also add that Old Sacramento is very touristy and somewhat disappointing. Go - check out the museums and then spend time in mid-town - East of the Capitol. The good restaraunts, shops, and galleries are not in Old Sac!

If you bid for a 4* in downtown Sacramento on PL you'll get either the Hyatt or the Sheraton. I stayed at the Sheraton for $40/night for a double last March on a PL bid. Go to www.biddingfor travel.com and scroll down to hotels for more info on how to bid; the helpful site moderators will help you construct a bid.

It's possible to walk down a pedestrian mall to Old Sacramento from the Sheraton, but it's quite a hike. If the weather is nice, it would be enjoyable. There are also free trollys (?ies) that cover most of the route.

We've stayed at the BW Sandman a couple times. It's a clean, no frills type of place, but it isn't in walking distance to Old Town.

Thanks for all the input....We decided on the Embassy Suites - Riverfront Promenade. It's only 1 night and we got a decent rate and it'll be lovely, I'm sure. Linda

be sure to eat in the Embassy Suites cafe - it has gotten pretty good reviews for a brand new place.

Also - a very short walk from the hotel at the south end of Old Sac is the Rio City Cafe. VERY good food right on the river with lovely indoor diningrooms and a terrific terrace over looking the river, Tower Bridge and the Delta King.

If it's a nice evening have dinner at Il Fornaio on Capital Mall. The outside patio is so beautiful. If you can't eat outside or it's too hot, skip it, because inside is just too loud!

When you get back I'd love to hear what you thought of the Embassy. It's so new we haven't heard much buzz yet.

I stayed at the Clarion, it was great. Right in front of the governers mansion. only paid 50 a night. Walking distance to capitol, the mall. I loved Calrion because they have shuttle that would pick you up and drop you off anywhere until midnight. They would drop me off at Old Sac, and it's for free. They pick you from the airport also.

Also about the Clarion, they just finished refurbishing, which it needed. We have drinks in their bar before we go to the theater and watched the improvements. Much nicer. The Clarion is a firly old property but still is lovely ivy-covered on the outside.

I guess it depends on what you consider walking distance, since I did walk from the Sandman to Old Sacramento
