Ogunquit or York beach area?

I am trying to decide where to stay
on our vacation to Maine. I've read many
things about Ogunquit, it sounds pretty
nice but i've also read about the York
area, that too seems nice.
Any suggestions?
I would also need to know of any nice
plaes to stay. (not B&B'S)

Both places are fun in different ways. We go to York with the kids mostly We love the playground, watching the taffy being made and eating ice cream at the counter at the Goldenrod. Walking on the beach etc. As a couple we have stayed at the York Harbor Inn twice. There is also the Stage Neck Inn - upscale full service hotel. Never stayed but the grounds are nice.

We've gone to Ogunquit as a couple not as a family. We stayed at the Sea Bell (I am fuzzy on the name). It was right on the water, close to town and served homemade blueberry muffins in the morning but it was essentially a motel. We've walk the Marginal Way and eaten at the lobster shack at the end (touristy but I love it).

Don't know if you're a couple, a single or a family.

I agree w/Bennie.
Ogunquit is definitely a great place for couples (good restaurants, shops, museum) but probably less fun for kids.

There are quite a few "luxury motels" in Ogunquit proper in addition to B&Bs. Many are likely to be expensive and possibly all booked up if you're thinking of a weekend this summer.Weekdays will be easier, off-season, a whole other story.
Fill us in on more details of your situation

It is just my boyfriend and I, no kids.
We are staying at several diferent places in Maine. First is Portland than uo to the Boothbay area and the last leg of the trip I figured we would stay
further south, since we are flying out of Manchester, NH. We want to stay as close to the beach as possible. I've been checking around and I don't know
where is the best place to stay would be
down in the southern area. Thanks again!

Have stayed at the Stage Neck Inn in York Harbor and loved it. It's a very nice hotel, and as mentioned above, the grounds are beautiful. It sits on a bluff where you can enjoy great ocean views. While I agree that the York Beach area is probably more for kids, the York Harbor town itself is quaint and has some interesting historical sites. The York Harbor Inn and Stage Neck Inn are both nearer the town, rather than the beach. The Stage Neck Inn has its own little beach. We ate lunch at the York Harbor Inn and thought it would be a great place to stay, but it's not quite as near the ocean as Stage Neck Inn. We drove through Ogunquit and were quite pleased that we stayed in York Harbor. Found it quieter and more quaint. The Nubble lighthouse is beautiful, and the setting is breathtaking. I would consider it a must-see.

I have booked a room at the York Harbour Inn in August. Can anyone who has been there tell me anything about their stay?
How far is it from the beach? We have an oceanview room. Is it worth the extra money? I am looking for a romantic vacation with my husband. Did we make a good choice staying at the York Harbour Inn?

We just got back from York Beach and really enjoyed it. Since Ogunquit is so close you can easily enjoy both places. We went to the "basement" of the York Harbour Inn for dinner (informal) and were disappointed but I heard the main restaurant is very nice. I heard the rooms are small but quaint and nice. It is a short walk to the right to York Harbour which was picturesque and has a nice walk along the harbour over to another small island. When the tide is going in our out it's interesting to see how the ocean meets with the "river" water and really makes a strong current. It's a peaceful area but a pretty good distance from the "happening" areas. It's a toss-up between York (short sands beach area is my favorite) and Ogunquit. Next time I'll probably stay in Ogunquit. We stayed with a friend on York Beach right on the water and it was fantastic with great views. Good luck!

Mariko - I've stayed at York Harbor twice and have had dinner there several times. I've always enjoyed it. The first time we stayed in a lovely room in a small building across the driveway from the main building. It wasn't ocean view. The second time we stayed in a building next to the main building but for some reason I think they give this building a different name (like the Colonial Inn or something like that). That room has a great view and was furnished pretty nicely and had a wood stove and a small balcony. I have fond memories of waking up to the sound of crashing waves.

The inn is across the street from the ocean. It never had a great view as there was a house obstructing the view to the ocean. That house was torn down and the land made into a park as a bequest from the owner to the town. Now the inn has great views.

The inn has two restaurant facilities - the pub that is in the cellar and is informal. The food is fine but we found it a bit smoky from a fireplace. The more formal dining room is upstairs and is lovely. The food was very good each time we've eaten there.

I really love this area. Check out the outlet malls in Kittery if you get the chance - you may find a bargain or two. Also you are very close to Portsmouth, NH which is great also.
