My wife an I are planning a long weekend in Ogunguitth e beginnig of August.

We would appreciate any suggestions regarding lodging, restaurants, and things to do. Thanks

I stayed at the Ogunquit River Plantation which is just on the outskirts and almost in Wells. It was a fine, basic place to stay but not really in the center. I loved dining at Clay Hill Farm! They have a web site where you can see their menu. The food was suberb as was the service. In Ogunquit, you can browse in town, walk the Marginal Way and go to Perkins cove. It is not far from Portland ME or Portsmouth NH. There are loads of antique shops in the area as well.

I grew up staying at Wells Beach, ME every summer. I can't help with the lodging since we rented houses...but here are some places to visit: Eat at Billy's Chowderhouse in Wells. There will be a wait and it's worth it. Excellent clam/seafood chowder. The Maine Diner in Wells is also very good. Both of these restaurants are very casual. Shopping in Kennebunkport, ME is only a half hour away from Wells/Ogunquit. There are tons of nice shops, restaurants, and beautiful homes on the water to just drive by and look at. George Bush has a gorgeous home there. You can also travel to Old Orchard Beach (about 2 exits North of Wells). This is more of a Carnival setting (rides, etc). Good if you have children. (But I had fun-late 20's) There are a lot of fun bars there as well. Let's see what else...if you like outlet shops, Kittery, ME (closer to the NH border) is chock full of them. If I think of more, I will post again. As mentioned by the other reply, Perkins Cove is a great place to visit. (York Beach is nice too) Bring $$ the stores can be pricey. Have fun!

The Sparhawk Hotel is a pleasant and convenient place to stay. Dinner at Arrows, Clay Hill, or Hurricane would be fabulous. A new place, 5-O, has been getting great feedback. There is a lobster pound in Ogunquit, and also a clambake in York at Fosters Downeast. Shopping, antiquing, beaching are the big activities.

Dick, don't forget the Ogunquet Playhouse, a professional summer stock venue. Nice way to spend an evening. Also, Portland is not that far away, and it's a lovely city with a great art museum. Visit the Old Port section.

I grew up going to Ogunquit every summer with my family, and still go every year with my fiance for a long weekend. My family always stayed at the Sparhawk in the Barbara Dean House, but you have to stay for at least a week. The nicer resorts usually require a one week commitment, but there were three lovely places I can highly recommend.

The first choice is the Beachmere Inn - the views of the cliffs and the ocean from your balcony are just breathtaking. A very nice property, although a little pricier than some of the other inns and B&B's.

The Colonial Resort is not on the ocean, however, it is very affordable, and they do a lovely breakfast in their lobby and outdoor wrap around porch. Rooms were all very clean, with cute antique furnishings. You can get an apartment there as well.

Lastly, another lovely Victorian B&B is The Chestnut Tree Inn. Rooms were also very clean, filled with antiques, and there was a continental breakfast downstairs. The home is beautiful, and priced very reasonably.

All are in walking distance of shops, beach, and most restaurants.
As for restaurants, Arrows is incredible - it is one of the best restaurants in New England, and is highly rated in the Zagats Boston guide. Jackie's Too is right on the cliffs over-looking the ocean in Perkins Cove - you can sit outside with the waves crashing, while eating the most delicious lobster. Hurricane is also in Perkins Cove down a few feet, and is excellent, with excellent views as well. Also love Clay Hill Farm and the Cliff Head.

I'm very interested in what you decide, my husband & I are looking to spend a long weekned in Ogunquit in the begining of August as well. I am a little overwhelmed at all the information available on the internet. I just started researching and have yet to narrow it down. Did you want to be within walking distance of the beach? That is one of my requirements...any input would be greatly appreciated.

For a very special night out, Nothing beats the beautiful ARROWS...Check out the garden..they grow their own vegetables and herbs. My other favorie is THE HURRICANE fantastic view of the water. There is also a sunday jazz lunch. Reservations a must. I live in Boston so I don't know about inns and hotels. We drive for the day only.
