I've stayed at the Cliff House and thought it was very nice. There are 3 buildings there, 2 are newer and nice and the 3rd and is older and very college dormlike so make sure you don't get that building. Many people also like the Anchorage. Sorry, can't help with B&Bs.

We stayed at the Meadowmere in Ogunquit Maine last year...after Labor Day..loved it so much we stayed 3 days...it was after Labor Day so rates were considerably less. It has a great outdoor spa which we took advantage of every afternoon.

For a larger, nicer motel on the water checkout the Anchorage or the Sparhawk. The Beachmere is a large B&B/Inn on the water in the same area. These are all right in town. The Cliff House is not in town, you will need to drive (or take thier shuttle) to get to town.
If you don't need to be on the water check out Meadowmere or the Hartwell House.

I stayed at the Sparhawk and it was very nice with deck right on the water. We had a great meal at what used to be Hurricaines at Perkins Cove. There's a new restaurant there now, which also seems nice (amazing view of water). Sept. is a great time to go - you should also get excellent rates after Labor Day.
