If you give us a perspective on your taste it will be easier to recommend. I recently saw "The Fantasticks" at the Sullivan Street Playhouse and enjoyed it very much, but it's a rather lightweight romantic musical romp that might not suit everyone. I have also been several times to see "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" at the Jane Street Theatre and am wildly enthusiastic about the show but it is NOT for everyone. Picture a cross between Rocky Horror and the rock musical "Tommy" and you'll be begin to get the picture. Strong verbal sexual content but insightful, wickedly funny, moving and the music totally rocks. Not for the easily offended. They just opened additional productions in Boston and LA and 80's film star Ally Sheedy is now in the lead role in NYC.

The New York Times has a site with theater reviews for current performances at www.nytoday.com. You can search by recommended plays or by type of play. You can also see what's currently playing at www.buybroadway.com., both Broadway and off Broadway. And if you go to www.playbill.com, you can get discounts on some of the shows in New York City.
Someone recommended "Sideman" to me but it didn't look like something that I'd be interested in.

Howard-
I'm glad to hear that Side Man is excellent, as I have tickets for later this month, and although I have heard good reviews, I hadn't heard directly from anyone who had seen it. I also have tickets for The Gathering, which got great reviews, but I don't know anyone who has seen it either.

Mel,
I was reminded by a couple of postings about Chicago that the Blueman Group is an incredible performance art group that is wild, wacky, fun, insane, musical, etc...and I am pretty sure they have a group in New York doing the show also. Don't miss it for sheer insanity and hilarity...Maria

Hedwig is a rock musical that many consider to be the best rock musical ever created (admittedly a genre with few entries but it is a great show). It is set as though you were in the audience of a rock band performing the concert and the lead singer is sharing asides (and offering a monologue) about personal life history in between songs. Best to visit www.hedwig.com and read a few details before going. There should also be a RealAudio sound clip there of a song ot two. They have a web special of $10 or $15 off for the Mon-Thurs show but also available (or was this past summer) is a late show on Friday and Saturday night. The late show was only $25 when I went and the band really cuts loose musically. Sit downstairs rather than in the mezzanine/balcony.
