I am taking 2 very good girl friends to New YOrk in October. They have never been to N.Y. before. We are in our 50's. I have several things in mind, but wanted some more input.

We will be going to the theatre one night, how about some other activity suggestion or restaurants or entertainment.

I am from NYC and I have to say anything or anywhere you go in the city you will have fun! I would definitely go and see Times Square. Without knowing what you all are into, I can't really suggest anything else right now.

That's a pretty broad request. We'll need to know something about what kind of things you like to do and what kind of food you want to eat (not to mention budget) before we can be of much help.

There is tons to do and see in NYC.

Want an overview of the whole city? how about a bus tour or the Circle Line ferry tour?

Like history? how about Ellis Island and a tour of lower Manhattan

Like art? there are dozens of museums for everyone's taste.

Like shopping? there are lots of designer boutiques in SoHo, there's always Bloomingdale's, Canal Street is home to knockoffs.

Want to see the usual "sights"? Any travel book will list the biggies for you and how to get there, hours, how much they cost.

Start with a good guidebook to help you narrow done your options then start reading this board.

Without knowing what you like, male, female, foodies, shopping, arts, yadda yadda, we can't really give you any good specific advice.

I know I ws not very specific, but do like the idea of the Circle Line Ferry and will check it out.

Will also do the shopping circuit. As far as restaurants, interested in moderately priced and something for them to go home and talk about. As far as type of food - we are pretty open. Not crazy about Mexican. What do you know of the Blue Fin restaurant - stay away or try it.

Manhattan has thousands of great restaurants. Check out digitalcity and citysearch for info.

Blue Fin? You can do much better (e.g., BLT Fish).

Highly recommend the food walks - Chelsea Market and/or Greenwich Village.

Also fabulous are the Circle Line Harbor Lights cruises.

Can you tell me more about the food walks. I think they sound like a lot of fun.

Blue Fin is part of a small chain. For some reason it is rated very highly on Trip Advisor: Number one, I think. For the life of me I cannot fathom their ranking system but since you asked, I agree with earlier poster..it is fine (very touristy) and you can do much better. Many of the places touted on this board are not places locals would choose. I cannot offer alternatives without knowing your food tastes and budget. I would not eat anywhere in Times Square area...if you must dine nearby, go to Tenth Avenue where there are far less touristy spots. If I were visiting NYC for the first time, Times Square is the last place I would go...see a show and leave the neighborhood!! NYC has much more to offer!!

What neighborhoods do you particularly like?

I've done the "noshing tour" of the Lower East Side through Big Apple Tours. It is great.

Has anyone done the Big Onion ethnic walking/food tour? Did you like it?

I did the Big Onion walking/eating tour of the Lower East Side. It's the one my post above was referring to. I enjoyed it thoroughly. The guide was a Ph.D student in history and very knowledgable. The tour covered the "immigrant roots" of the LES, including Little Italy, Chinatown and what is more commonly referred to as the lower east side. Foods from a variety of ethnic cuisines were sampled including some I'd never seen or heard of before. I recommend it.
