It looks like my kids' teachers' are going on strike for 2 weeks next week. What am I going to do with them (10 and 12) for 2 weeks in oct?

Play along with me - where could I go, super cheap, in Oct. that they boys, and I, would like.

Someone has mentioned Great Wolf Lodge, but please don't make me go back there. Or Disney. I would love to go look at the fall foliage in NE, but not sure I could get the boys excited for that.

If you could take a quick getaway this month with your kids, where would you go?

karens, where are you located? Are you looking for someplace fairly close to home?

I'm in PHL, and I just got off SW's website. I cannot believe everyone thinks their fares are so low. Maybe b/c we also have USair as a hub, but $230/rt. is not a "promotional fare", but business as usual, IMO. (My husband's going to Chicago next week for business and I thought we'd tag along. SW = USAir. Next week he's going to Charlotte, not really sure I want to go there. So I searched Reno, $230 (SW=USAir)

Maybe I can priceline a hotel really cheap somewhere nearby, like in DC. Or a great resort in the mid-Atlantic/New England. Any ideas for that?

My first thought was Ohiopyle State Park in the Laurel Highlands. They could raft the Middle Yough, take bike rides, do paintball, hike to waterfalls, fish. There's even a natural waterslide, but it will probably be too cold for that. I don't know of any cabins to recommend because we always camp. I'm sure there are plenty around. Seven Springs and Wisp Resort in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland are fairly close.

Reno may be a good spot, if you actually stay and spend time in Tahoe. I think Chicago sounds good.

trippin - yes, both would be great, but both are $230/rt and for the 3 of us for a long weekend, that's a bit too pricey. (We have 3 family vacations planned next year, so it's not like we NEED to get away).

Now I'm thinking closer to home. It's fun to think about...I'll look into resorts...

There are also caverns nearby that the boys can explore.

If you follow devonmci's advice, take a tour of Fallingwater - whether or not you think the kids will want to. It's the type of place they will never forget.

Cape Cod woulnd't be too bad a drive. You could still have some beach time, might hit "Indian Summer". Maybe a place with an indoor pool? Rates should be really low right now. You could stop to see Plymouth Rock, etc, good time of year for that stuff. Maybe visit Boston too, for the aquarium etc.

Out of curiosity -- when your kids' teachers' go on strike, do they have to make up that time later? Will they go an extra two weeks in the summer? How do you know the strike will only last two weeks?

I'm a teacher in NY and going on strike is illegal, plus you give up two days pay for every one day on strike.

Aren't there a lot of condo options on the Del-Mar-Va pennisula? We visited Chiconteague in the VA section.

Thank you, all. I would seriously consider Cape Cod, except we were just up there in August.

We're in PA and from what I understand, the teachers can strike, but by law, must return after 10 school days. The days missed must be made up before June 30 and I guess we will have vacation days taken from Christmas and Easter. We already have an Easter trip booked and planned, based on the school calendar and no strike threat in the beginning of the school year. It messes up so many things doing this now.

Just a suggestion: I'd be concerned about using Priceline, since it's nonrefundable. A strike is never a sure thing, and they can settle at the last minute, or even after a day or two. I'd be more comfortable with something I could cancel (although that does seem to leave out airfare).
