Oceana Hotel in Santa Monica
Has anyone ever stayed at this hotel? Last year we stayed at the Miramar, loved the location but didn'tlike the rooms. Looking for another hotel, with same location, but a bit more casual and beachy. This hotel looks really nice. The Georgian looks nice too but it has no pool. Any advice. Anyone familiar with The Oceana?

Small property, pretty highly-regarded, not on the beach (like the Miramar, it's up a bluff from the sand). A long hike from the Promenade and Pier, a fairly long hike from the shopping on Montana Ave. Still, it's not slumming-- if you MUST have a pool, it's a pretty good choice. Make sure you have a car or good walking shoes.
The Georgian is centrally-located in downtown Santa Monica, with ocean views and a two-block walk to the Pier. It would be my first choice if I were looking for a hotel in SM.

Thank you for your response. I thought a pool would make it more resorty. It just looks nicer than the Georgian, plus it has suites with kitchenettes. How far a walk isit to the Promanade. Isn't it close to the Miramar? My husband doesn't like "small, charming" hotels and I think that's what the Georgian sounds like. Guess I'm confused

The Georgian is larger than the Oceana. These properties are basically equidistant from the Miramar. The Georgian is a historic property-- it dates from the late 1920s, and in its current form is one of the last hotels still left in the Hollywood Déco architectural style of that era. It's just a different hotel than the Oceana, which by the way is a mere four blocks or so from the Promenade. It really depends on your taste.

No-- I work a block and a half north of the Georgian and three blocks south of the Oceana for almost 17 years. I happen to be one of the few Fodorites that actually "likes" the greater LA area-- although I think that's primarily due to people not "getting" "LA" as a concept. I could be wrong....
