I will be traveling to Oakland and staying in the Jack London Square. How safe is the area, what to see, to do, etc.... Thanks.

I will not have a renatl car if this helps.

If staying at Jack London Square proper you should be fine. If a single woman I would not walk far at night tho...I've seen a few shady characters and some gang looking-like people.

If you're into good live jazz performances, then Yoshi's is within walking distance.

Ask at the hotel about getting to the Rockridge area, an interesting neighborhood full of excellent small restaurants, bookstores, shops etc. Crawling with people until all hours of the night. There is a Rockridge BART stop.
