Oakland??

I will be traveling to Oakland and staying in the Jack London Square. How safe is the area, what to see, to do, etc.... Thanks.

I will not have a renatl car if this helps.

If staying at Jack London Square proper you should be fine. If a single woman I would not walk far at night tho...I've seen a few shady characters and some gang looking-like people.
lots of restaurants to choose from
Sundays great Farmers Market right in the square, movie complex,
nice bookstore with coffee shop
ferry that goes to San Fran waterfront.
Tour the Potomac.. old US presidential yahct

If you're into good live jazz performances, then Yoshi's is within walking distance.

Ask at the hotel about getting to the Rockridge area, an interesting neighborhood full of excellent small restaurants, bookstores, shops etc. Crawling with people until all hours of the night. There is a Rockridge BART stop.

Thanks for all of your help, will be staying at the Jack London Inn, which appears to be across the street from the square.

We often go to Yoshi's and have dinner before we enjoy the music. Good selection of Japanese food.
