Thanks again for this excellent report! It's so good, I even read some of the entries while on a Swiss train ride through the Alps.

I'm following along (and drooling) on our road trip. We're definitely going to MW next time we're there.

Day 6 Part 2:

After our satisfying lunch from Fumi’s shrimp truck in Kahuku we continued our North Shore crawl. We stopped by Sunset Beach for a bit to watch the waves. It was really pretty although it would be sunny and then cloud up quickly and rain for a few seconds…then the sun would peer out again. We drove further but did not stop at the turtle basking beach because it looked really crowded and there wasn’t any parking. I still wanted to see some turtles and someone on the photography tour had told me about another place so we continued on to Haleiwa. There is a beach park there called Haleiwa Ali’I and apparently it was a new resting ground for basking turtles. It was our first time at this beach and we didn’t realize how big and spacious the park was. They were setting up for broadcasts of the Triple Crown at the main beach area but we ventured from the more populated area to a rather empty but rockier beach off to the far left – and there was a big turtle taking a nap in the sand! There was hardly anyone around too. Hopefully it will stay that way!

We spent some time wandering around the beach park. It actually got sunny again so it was really nice although the beach in some parts had lots of rocks and pebbles so it was hard to walk into the water.

We couldn’t leave Haleiwa without a stop at Matsumoto’s Shave Ice. It was here I realized how it underwent a huge transformation. Gone was the old general store and in its place…a brand-spanking new “complex” of stores. Matsumoto’s is still there, of course, but it’s been renovated and is now much larger. There’s other stores and more parking as well. There is also better management of queues – most of the Matsumoto queue snakes around indoors as opposed to lining up outside before. The renovation was done really nicely but it still kept a bit of the vintage wooden crate vibe. There was still a general store section where you could buy Matsumoto and North Shore t-shirts. I loved all the original t-shirt designs. As for the shave ice…well, it’s still good! But gone are the cone-shaped holders. It’s now served in bowls. Other than that, it was still the same shave ice, although at this time a warm rain started again and my shave ice melted quickly.

It had been a long but fun day on the North Shore and we were getting tired so we headed back down to Waikiki. It also started to pour at this time. I had initially had plans to go to Japanese restaurant Nanzan Jiro Jiro for dinner but after dining out at nice restaurants for the past few days we were actually kinda tired of going out to eat. I think we just craved something comforting and simple for our last night in Hawaii so we cancelled dinner. As we drove down the H2 then the H1 highways I realized that we’d be passing through Aiea…and that meant, dinner from Aiea Bowl!

It’s very interesting how an old-school bowling alley can have some of the best comfort food in Oahu. The Alley at Aiea Bowl has been written up many times especially for its Hawaiian-style oxtail soup and plate lunch offerings. I heard their desserts like the lemon crunch cake are also extremely popular. It was still raining on and off and when we arrived there was no parking in any of the stalls. Rather than sit and wait for one to open up, we just ordered from their takeout window and took it back to the condo to eat. We hit some traffic on the way back (it was rush hour after all) but finally we were home and looking forward to our dinner! I had ordered their famous oxtail soup and a plate lunch of mahi mahi and loco moco. Everything was delicious and hit the spot on the rainy evening! The oxtail soup is served with grated ginger and cilantro on the side which you can put in the soup itself but I like to drizzle some soy sauce (shoyu) in it and use it as a dipping sauce for the meat. The mahi and loco moco were also really good and were prepared really well – the fish was not dry and had lots of flavor and the gravy on the loco moco was very tasty! It’s too bad Aiea Bowl is not that close to Waikiki or I’d get takeout from there more often. I feel like the quality and preparation is better than Rainbow Drive-In. I will definitely return when passing by Aiea, it’s a great option for some yummy and relatively cheap local food.

The next day was our last day but we pretty much had a full day since our flight was to leave at 9pm. We were packed up and ready to leave the next day. Coming up, our last day and one of the nicest surprises ever!

Aloha tifa! It's funny you just posted this morning! I am just catching up on your report!

My brother & K's baby girl arrived...I'm an aunt!! But, one month before her arrival, my grandmother passed away. DH & I went to Colorado for a long weekend in December then Christmas so I haven't been on Fodor's much these days.

I'm back and I love your report! Can't wait for the finale!

With a heavy heart, I will not be partaking in the 2016 countdown.... I am not going to Kauai in 2016. DH & I are going to England w/ my Dad. I know poor me, boo hoo...! I'm excited but I love my time on Kauai and it's going to be a long wait until May 2017.

Keep it coming, I need to live vicariously!
When are you aloha bound again?

Hi Louistraveler! I was wondering where you were! Congrats on becoming an aunt! I became an aunt for the 3rd time last October - to the first boy in our family! I have all sisters and 2 nieces so having a nephew was a nice change. Sorry to hear about your grandmother, I hope she passed away peacefully.

Wow England! I haven't been to London for many years now but I loved it there. I hope you have a great trip but I know you will miss Kauai. I miss Hawaii when I'm not there all the time!

We don't have any trips planned as of right now, but I do have some vouchers on Hawaiian Airlines that I need to use (meaning book the flight, not travel) before the end of February. We got them earlier this year when our flight to Kauai was delayed by 14 hours. It is only a couple of hundred off a ticket but it's better than nothing. I am thinking september or november - I'd love to go to Kauai again but it would depend on price and the number of days I can take off. I may squeeze in another quickish trip to Oahu because there was still so much I didn't get to do on this past trip and flights to Oahu are much cheaper than to other islands.

Hopefully May 2017 will be here before you know it!

Day 5 is on my blog! I've captured our day visiting Lanikai beach, Bogart's Cafe, Heavenly Waikiki, and 678 Hawaii for Korean BBQ. Enjoy!

And here's the finale of our trip...

Day 7:

This morning we woke up a little sad because it was the last (official) day of our trip – where had the time gone? We still had a full day ahead of us and wanted to make the most of it. We spent a leisurely morning in the condo, got everything together and loaded up the car with our luggage, returned the parking pass to the condo, and headed out.

We drove on Monsarrat Ave towards the Banan food truck where we stopped for a light breakfast/snack. Banan is a truck that serves ice-cold whipped bananas – kinda like a banana soft-serve. Some are flavored with acai, or turmeric, and some are plain. There are different toppings like fruit/granola etc. They were very generous with samples and you could try all the different flavors. We got an acai banana bowl and it came with a bunch of fruit on top. There are cute areas where you can sit as well in front of the truck. We settled on a table with chairs and their brought our Banan bowl to us. It was quite good, with the bananas adding a nice creamy texture to the acai. I’ll come back and try the other flavors. The green one that had kale blended in it was pretty good too!

We headed over to Costco to refill our gas and get some last minute gifts for people back home – mac nuts, chocolate, etc. We then headed to Kalihi to eat at a place I had wanted to try for a long time – Ethel’s Grill. It’s literally a hole-in-the-wall type joint mostly frequented by locals (and visiting foodies). The parking is pretty scarce there but there is a very small lot that you can park in. We went right before the lunchtime crowd and managed to get a spot. The place is quite small but it was packed. We got one of the last remaining tables for two. I definitely wanted to try the famous tuna tataki so we got that as an appetizer. For an entrée I tried an Okinawan-American specialty: taco rice. DH got a fried fish platter. I think the fish was either wahoo or aku.

The tuna tataki was excellent. The fresh tuna is very lightly seared, served sliced in a bed of bean sprouts and topped with crisp fried garlic chips. It’s doused with a light soy-ginger-garlic sauce. It was great and everything that I expected it to be. I was so happy to try this dish. It was very inexpensive too, I think 8 bucks or so. My taco rice was a bed of rice topped with taco beef, tomatoes, lettuce and a fried egg. It’s like a cross between a loco moco and a burrito without the tortilla. It was actually pretty fun to eat but the portions were huge so I could only eat half. My DH’s fish dish was yummy too as the fish was crunchy and the portions large. I would definitely return to Ethel’s as it’s a local institution with great food at reasonable prices. It would have to be its own destination as Kalihi is not really on the way to anything, but Kalihi has such a strong local food culture that I want to explore it further on our next trips.

Soon it was time for our afternoon of pampering…at the Na Ho'ola Spa in the Hyatt Regency. I had a couple of Hyatt gift card that were begging to be used so we booked a couples massage that afternoon before our flight back home. I love treating myself to a massage or facial right before we hop on plane as I like to hold on to the vacation feeling a little while longer.

The Na Hoola is a lovely spa – very serene and luxe. Our massages were amazing. One of the best I’ve had! We relaxed in the lounge area with a view of the pool and Waikiki Beach and we used the saunas for a while before we got ready to leave. I was so sad to leave Hawaii - I just wish we could spend another day here.

It was like my prayers were answered...as we were paying for our spa treatments, I realized I got an alert on my phone from United Airlines that our flight that evening back to New Jersey was delayed…

…by 17 hours!!

That meant our flight was to leave the next day at 4pm. Normally a delay like this would drive me into a panic, but we were in Hawaii, and I had more important things to do! After a quick call to United, it was confirmed that our flight was indeed delayed but it was not due to mechanical or plane issues, it was due to weather/acts of God so that meant we would not be getting compensated for anything. I knew we would have to spend another night in Hawaii but where…I checked rates for the night in Waikiki and everything was bordering on 300-400 dollars even for mediocre hotels. I did not want to pay that much but I would have if there was no other option. I then realized I had a number of points in my IHG (Intercontinental) account so I checked to see if we could book a night at the Holiday Inn Beachcomber which was just down Kalakaua Ave. They had availability so I booked a standard room. Another night in Hawaii…for free, I’ve never been happier about a flight delay before!

As we were leaving the Hyatt (remember to get your parking validated at the spa) we realized they had a farmer’s market in the lobby. They were selling fresh tropical fruit so we got some lychees to eat on the beach. Yes we were going to the beach again!

We went back to the car and drove the short distance to the Holiday Inn. We have never stayed here before but the location is fantastic, in the heart of Waikiki very close to the Royal Hawaiian. We checked in and they had upgraded us to a partial ocean view. The room was pretty basic but it was perfectly fine for one night. We headed out to spend a relaxing evening at Waikiki Beach. We sat and ate our fruit really thankful that everything worked out and that we were able to extend our trip just a little while longer. We caught beautiful red skies during sunset - it was wonderful!

We spent the night walking around Waikiki. We went to an old favorite for dinner, Ramen Nakamura, which is very close to the Beachwalk. It’s just counter space on a large U-shaped counter. I ordered my favorite oxtail ramen and DH got a spicy ramen. Both were really good and hit the spot for a laid-back dinner after an evening at the beach. It was a glorious night!

Day 8:

The next morning we woke up to embrace the day – our extra day on Oahu! We got dressed for the beach and walked over to Beachwalk again. Breakfast today was at Bill’s Sydney. The restaurant is gorgeous, it is two levels with the main dining level being on the 2nd floor, and it is huge, with high vaulted ceilings in natural wood. I had heard so much about their ricotta hotcakes so that’s what I ordered. DH got a traditional Aussie breakfast (Chef Bill Granger hails from Australia). I loved eating in the bright airy space. The pancakes were absolutely delicious. They were perfectly cooked and had a great flavor. They were served with honeycomb butter and bananas. DH’s breakfast was pretty good but by comparison it was a standard breakfast platter although the eggs were scrambled really well.

After breakfast we hit Waikiki beach for our last dose of sun and sand! It was a beautiful day and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on the beach for the last time.
Soon it was time to pack up (again), and leave for the airport. We made a quick stop at Don Quixote for some lunch bentos and poke to-go to eat in the airport/plane.

Our flight back to Newark was actually barely half full. I guess most people had found other flights while we basked in the glory of an extra day on the islands. Luckily we did not need to be at work until the next day anyways. We each got our own window seats and were able to get some rest. Sad to go home but it was a very fun and productive trip. I really love Oahu and it is constantly changing. We are big foodies so we love all that Oahu has to offer. It has the cosmopolitan vibe that we crave but combined with Hawaii’s natural beauty and Aloha it is just a perfect balance of everything. Can’t wait for our next trip!

The end! Thanks for reading! I'll be posting links to my blog for the last few days soon. Aloha!

The rest of my blog posts are up which concludes our trip to Oahu!

Day 7: http://sulynnchen.com/travelblog/?p=1678
Bonus Day 8: http://sulynnchen.com/travelblog/?p=1683

We actually have another trip to Oahu booked at the same time this November. We remembered we actually have some credit on Hawaiian Airlines to use which we got when our trip to Kauai was delayed by a day. That was not a delay I enjoyed but at least we got some compensation!
