Oahu Hotel Question!
I wanted to know if anyone has stayed at the Ihilani Resort and Spa on Oahu or the Halekulani on Oahu? If so, what did you think of these two places...how were the rooms? My husband can be kind of picky, so would you say they were in good condition? Thanks to anyone who responds!

My wife & I were in Oahu 2 yrs ago..did not get to see the Ihilani, but were in the Halekalani's sister hotel, one block from beach (waikiki parc) Very, very nice properties. The Halekalani is one of the top rated hotels in all of Hawaii. You won't be disappointed with the rooms!

I stayed at the Ihilani in March 1996, for a conference. It is beautiful, BUT - it is 30 miles west from downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. You absolutely must have a car, as the city bus system doesn't serve this area. If you stay here, you will either have to drive lots to eat out, see attractions, etc or you will simply stay put at the resort. The Ihilani has a great (expensive) spa and what looks to be a lovely golf course, but I would bet that if you are 1st time travelers to Hawaii, you will probably be happier at the Halekulani because it is in the heart of the action in Waikiki, where you can skip the rental car, walk to multiple restaurants, take tours to the attractions, etc. In fact, I am going back to Hawaii in Feb to stay on Waikiki because I felt I missed so much the 1st time staying so far out of town.

We just returned from a week at the Ihilani, our fourth stay with them. I would stay no where else..
I too am VERY picky. Rooms are wonderful, huge, all lights, a/c, etc.are operated from phone by the bed. Baths are ultra-deluxe also and very large, service is impeccable, grounds are stunning, restaurants (4) are terrific, beach is perfect, all very Deluxe.
Ihilani has free transportation to many areas of Waikii and back several times a day as well as to the outlet mall and other places. If you do drive as we do, it is only about 40 min.to Waikii.
The entire week we were there it rained in Waikii and was sunny and beautiful at Ihilani since it is on the West side of the Island.
Hotels you mentioned in Waikii are very nice but much older (Ihilani is 4 yrs) baths are small and waikii is crowded and busy. All the Island sights are just as easily reached from Ihilani as from Waikii Hotels.
If you want more info, please e-mail me, our daughter lives in Waikii (a student at the University) so I have spent a great deal of time there.

The Ihilani is nice but nothing makes up for the fact that you are 30-45 minutes from Waikiki and you should also be aware of the crime problem on the Western side of Oahu. I lived there for three years and it's not a side tourists see (lucky for them), but most of the guidebooks warn about the crime and violence there. The Halekulani wins the contest hands down. Please stay there and have a wonderful time!
