On the way to or from Scottsdale & Sedona, make a stop in Jerome. It's a small old mining town with some very quaint shops & galleries. Definitely worth it. There's a very nice old restaurant where you can get lunch out on the porch - best strawberry pie!

Since you are arriving at 1 pm...by the time ou get luggage and rental car it will be close to 2pm...you should definetly NOT consider going to JEROME on the way to Sedona. Driving north on I 17 you can easily stop at Montezuma's Castle which is about 2/3 of the way to Sedona. It is near the interstate exit and is a great example of cliff dwellings (see from afar as opposed to hiking into it).
The Drive to Sedona is about 2 hours staright through depending on traffic (which will be substantial if a weekday or very heavy if a Friday).
While in Sedona two places to consider for lunch or dinner is l'Auberge which is creekside in Sedona; and the restaurant at the Enchantment resort in Boynton canyon where you can eat facing the red rocked canyon walls.
On the way to the grand canyon (which you dont need a reservation for) drive north through oak creek canyon into Flagstaff (which has a funky downtown); tkae 180 north to 64 north into the canyon.
Personally since you have only 2 days in sedona and one is at the grand canyon, I would skip going to Jerome and enjoy the Hyatt and sedona. But Jerome is interesting (i find it has been taken over by high end scottsdale shops and lots of tourists...it is necessary to see through all that in order to see the real Jerome)If you do go to Jerome, it might work out to go on your way to Scottsdale.
The Boulders is a real destination resort...no need to spend time in the car looking for scenery...when it is right there.
If you're interested in restaurants; you can just drive down Scottsdale road into the populated sections of Scottsdale....enjoy.

we will go to Montezumas' castle on the way to Sedona and hit Jerome on the way to Scottsdale/Carefree not too out of the way ? or should we take a different route to Boulders.
Is the Boulders really out of the way? the scenery looked so great it just seemed to emulate AZ? Since we are staying Sun-Wens we got a good rate - should I move the hotel to actual Scottsdale.- then again as long as they put a drink in my hand by the pool what could be wrong !!

Costello: I would definitely stay w/the Boulders--the scenery is magnificent and the private casitas (especially for an anniversary
can't be matched in Scottsdale as far as I know. A short trip would be into old town scottsdale which would be about 20 minutes or Rawhide is about 10-15 minutes. We went to a ball game in Phoenix from the Boulders and that took about 45 minutes.

Just know that the Boulders is in Carefree, which is 20 minutes north of Scottsdale. It is a terrific and beautiful place to relax but you will have to drive to go anywhere else.
