Yes we won't have much luggage although it will be colder that time of year than we are used to here in California. But we'll carry our coat so should be able to travel lightly.

Everyone-thanks for the idea of the car service and the different ones to check. I will be sure to try some of the local ones to get the rates.

If you are on a truly budget trip, paula1470, then if you decide to stay in a hotel, I'd recommend you stay at the Comfort Inn Long Island City, which is 1 subway stop from midtown on the R/V train.

You'd stay on the 7 train with your daugher until Queensboro Plaza, then you'd jump off the train and walk 1 block to the hotel. She'd change to the N/W to go to Astoria (though some parts of Astoria are accessible only from the R/V train, so that's a different switch in Roosevelt Avenue).

I should have said absolutely use a Long Island car service from Islip. On the airport website they list them
http://macarthurairport.com/pages/9transportation.shtml

I would also get a quote from Dial7 or Carmel for a trip from Woodside train to Astoria and then Manhattan. Good luck.

Doug-Thanks for the tip. I will probably stay for sure with friends on the UWS. My daughter uses the N/W to get to her friend's apartment.

McLaurie- I am liking the idea of the car service more and more so I will check out the links you mentioned.
