NYC to Hoboken - how and what to do?
My husband and I are visiting NYC and are entertaining a move to the city so we would like to make it for fun and research. We have heard great things about Hoboken and would like to know the best way to get there and what we should explore during our visit. Any adivce???

There are 2 ways I know to get there-the PATH train from Penn Station or there's a ferry service (great on a nice day)www.nywaterway.com
I'll let someone who lives there tell you what to do.

I have no idea if this is still valid or not, but many years ago I was on an extended business trip in NYC. Once in a while we would take the ferry (beautiful views at night) or underground to Hoboken for dinner. Our favorite was Arthurs Steak House, a short walk up from the ferry - train station. As I recall, Arthurs had two menu items; steak or lobster. And about a quarter of NYC prices. Excuse my reminising, but is it still there?

kathryn,
PATH and ferry have already been mentioned, but you can also take the bus from NY Port Authority (NJ Transit #126). Ferry is the best mode of tranport from the relaxing and tranquility of it, but if you or your husband will be commuting to NYC via the PATH then i would suggest taking that to see how you like it. Bus is variable depending upon time of day.
If the weather is nice, i would grab a sandwich (from Vito's Deli or Fiore's... recommend anything with fresh mozzarella) and eat it at Pier A... new lovely park overlooking the NYC skyline.
If you mention what type of food you like i can give you other lunch/dinner recommendations. (and if you're interested in the above sandwiches for lunch idea, say so and i'll supply addresses)
Arthur's is still around and does a good business, but you'll more often get a peice of grizzle than a quality steak (it's gone downhill over the years, but what do you expect for $14?... burgers are a better choice there than the steaks IMO)
As far as what to do, there's really no "destination" places in Hoboken besides Stevens Institute (college) which has a "look out point" that has a beautiful view of the skyline. The other thing to "do" is to walk Washington Street and stop in the stores/cafes along the way.
When is your visit?

The ferry is my favorite way to get to Manhattan. There are 3 routes from the Hoboken pier at the PATH train terminal that will take you to lower Manhattan. One goes to World Financial, one to Battery Park and the other to Wall Street. There is also a ferry in the 14th Street area of Hoboken that will take you to Midtown. PATH train takes you to the West Village (Christopher St.) with stops along the way till you get to 33rd St. The bus takes you through the Lincoln Tunnel into the Port Authority on 8th Ave. in Midtown.
Our favorite restaurant in Hoboken is The Madison on the corner of 14th and Washington. There was a recent review in the Hoboken Reporter that stated it was the best restaurant in town. We've never had a bad experience there.
We haven't been to LaScala in awhile but during out past visits the food was great. Homemade pasta. It's on 14th Street as is Frankie & Johnnie's Steakhouse. It's good but we prefer the filet mignon at the Madison.
City Bistro on 14th has good food but the noise level can be deafening
Sunday Brunch is a better bet and on a nice day you can sit outside.
The Brass Rail on Washington St. is another good restaurant as is Amanda's according to my daughter).
If you want a great view with good food go over the bridge to Weehawken to the Chart House. It's on the pier at Lincoln Harbor. The dining room overlooks Manhattan...gorgeous view. Just around the corner from the Chart House is Ruth's Chris Steak House. I haven't been there myself but have heard good things about it.
As Bo said, walk Washington St. Some nice little shops and check out Carlo's Bakery. Hoboken's a great place with a small town feel by the big city! There's only one drawback and that's the lack of parking

If you are considering living there, you might want to take a look at the city's web pages:
www.hobokennj.org

You should also take a look at the websites for realtors in the city to get an idea of rental and purchase prices for houses and apartments. Hoboken is not really a bargain, but still probably a bit cheaper than living in NYC.
