NYC to Ann Arbor
Hi!
I'm considering going to Ann Arbor for a conference from NYC. I looked at Greyhound and it said it would taking 16 to 18 hours. I'm looking for a faster yet economical route.
Any suggestions? Bus, Train?
Also, is there an airport in Ann Arbor?
Would I need a car there? Or is there any public transport? Accessible taxis?
Thanks,
gtrekker2003

Cool! Ann Arbor is a great place to go to a conference (with the exception of mutant squirrels). Be sure to walk around UM's campus- very interesting buildings. Gorgeous in the fall I'm guessing there's not a (large) airport- I had to take a shuttle from somewhere near Detroit.
Amtrak- from Penn to Ann Arbor is about 15-16 hrs (not counting layovers). $138, one way. That economical enough?
Really, if I were you, I'd find the cheapest airfare possible, and go that way. Otherwise, the fastest trip is app. 16 hrs. You could drive yourself, or talk someone into accompanying you.
I remember ok public transportation- lots of taxis. Might depend on when you go- I went right in the middle of fall semester. And where is the conference? Mine was at UM- I could reach most of the "social area" of Ann Arbor on foot.
Have a great time!

Detroit Metro Airport is very close to Ann Arbor. The train won't be any faster because, unless something has changed, the closest trains from the East Coast get to Ann Arbor is Toledo, then you'd take a bus north. I'd keep an eye out for cheap airfares.

You will fly into DTW, and it is about a 1/2 hr drive. Unless you will be relying on the city busses, you will need a car - but that also depends on where you will be staying and where you want to go.
You might try flights to/from LGA - I have gotten many a flight in the $175 range RT.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the suggestions everybody! I'm definitely going to fly after realizing how far Michigan actually is from NY. I also didn't realize how close Ann Arbor is to Detroit.
The conference is actually in Ypsilanti Marriott in Ypsilanti.
Is this part of Ann Arbor? Near it? Any public transport here?
(I'm trying to avoid having to hire a car if possible.....)
Thanks again!

You're in luck. Ypsi is actually closer to the airport by a few miles. However, I'm pretty sure there's no public transportation. I'm not familiar with cabs to the area, but are there other attendees you could split one with?

Ypsi (pronounced ipsi) is actually on the other side of Ann Arbor. I hosted meetings at the Marriott but I'm not sure if they have any transpo service from the airport. You might want to call them directly and ask for recommendations.

gtrekker, last year I got a fare of just $200 last year NYC - Detroit round trip. I made my booking months in advance, but I got the impression that this was a regular route and a standard fare.
Be sure to try Zingerman's deli when you're there. It's a local institution with the best sandwiches ever!
