Anyone ever stayed at this property at W30 & 8th? Wondering if it would work as a place for grandparents to stay while attending niece's graduation from FIT. Seems like it may be a little too "hip" and not enough space/comfort but would like opinion from someone who has first hand experience.

I'd say NO. It was the Chelsea Star, something of a dump.

Name change and 2 * doesn't sound like Grandparent material to me.

There are several reliable chain hotels in the same vicinity, including a Hilton Garden Inn on West 28th. Search for hotels in Chelsea (even though this isn't really Chelsea anymore).

Yeah, pretty much confirms my hunches. Think I'll suggest lodging the grandparents in Jersey City. They can hop the ferry across to get to the Javits Center.

Staying in Jersey City may be more expensive than having them stay in Manhattan. Remember that the ferry costs $10 per person each way. And the hotel close to the ferry is the Hyatt Regency, which may be expensive or a bargain depending on timing.

The Hilton Garden Inn is a much better choice for them. It's within easy walking distance of FIT.

Hyatt points make it an attractive option!
The graduation is at the Javits, I believe.

If you ate using points, there are several Hyatts in Manhattan.

Make sure that the ferry will be running at times/days that are convenient. The ferry stop near Hyatt JC is called Paulus Hook. It's really designed for commuters. Not sure it runs on weeeknds.

There is a PATH train though.

There's a Hyatt Place in the west 30's that might be nicer for grandparents and put them whe they can walk around and be somewhat more independent.
