Does anyone have any off Broadway recommendations for kids 7 and 9 boys, besides Stomp, Blue Man Group, Cookin? I know about the New Victory Theater. I am looking for a cheaper option than Broadway - if possible , but want an appropriate show. I am open to anything? Off off's??? Thanks

You've already named the best off-Broadway choices for kids! The only other one I might add is the new hit "Tehe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." But, it'll tough to get tickets for that one.

There are discounts available to Cookin'. Shockheaded Peter is about to open from London and there are discounts listed on broadwaybox.com What about Slava's Snow show?

Unfortunately there aren't discounts the weekend I am going Feb 18-21. So I'm open to any "cheap" option. It may end up being better just taking a chance at the TKTS line. thanks for the help.

The Cookin' offer on playbill.com has no restrictive dates for its discount offer. And the Stomp discount offer on the website includes the 3 p.m. Sunday performance.

Yes, it's a totally non-verbal show, has gotten pretty good to very good reviews and my understanding is it's appropriate for five and up . . .

Howard - Have you been to see "Spelling Bee"? Would you say it's appropriate for ages 8-10? They have already seen Urinetown and Little Shop of Horrors. Thanks!

I'll chime in as well. I've seen Spelling Bee ... it is a sweet show, but there are some things that might not be appropriate for 8 & 10 year olds -- one of the boy characters has a crush on one of the girls, and sings about his "unfortunate erection" that he gets when he sees her -- that kind of thing. It's "naughty" and sort of adolescent -- but it would be the parent's call... Forewarned, I suppose ...

How is Cookin? We are thinking about seeing it but I would love to hear from someone who has seen it.

Cookin' is very funny; visual; non-verbal; high energy - a kind of combination slapstick, dance, juggling show-there is a thin plotline of the 3 chefs trying to oput together a banquet when they are joined by a fourth, good-looking sort of "rebel" chef who causes trouble - kids ages 6 to 14 would like like it - It is enjoyable for adults (easy to sit thru - you'll even laugh out loud a few times). My (at the time) 9 year old and many of his friends really liked it.

I know the original post was about Off-Broadway, but I wanted to also chime in for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (opening on Broadway this week). It is very enjoyable- good performances, great sets, and some fun effects. I wouldn't take a child younger than 5, because some parts may be frightening for them. But overall, it is a very entertaining show for the whole family. Enjoy!
