I've often thought about staying outside Manhattan to save a bit of cash but to be honest nothing beats the feeling of waking up in Manhattan and knowing that everything is just outside the door waiting for me! And as NYtraveller said, it you have a late night out, you don't want to have to cut things short so you can rush off and catch the last train out of the city.
