NYC- Il Mulinos
We will be in NYC and I would like to make reservations if possible to eat here. Can someone tell me what you think of this place. I know its pricey and crowded. Is there a dress code women, men? If I do not have a reservation what is the best time to eat there. Is this place that good or just over hyped? Thank you in advance.

Excellent food. Probably the best Italian in NYC. I have walked in off the street without a jacket at night and been seated. But don't plan on it. Usually, even with reservations, they will keep you waiting for up to one hour. So book for an early hour (say 6:30) and you probably wont have to wait. the lamb chops are incredible.

Steve...thank you very much. I will try to get a midweek reservation early in the evening. Again, thanks for the info, hopefully my husband will wear a jacket so it won't be a problem. I do have a follow-up questions; other than the lamb chops any other recomendations in terms of entree, desert, etc... TIA

a slight correction-it is Il Mulino, not Mulinos. They will try to talk you into the first course-pasta, and then a second course-meat/chicken,etc. You will also get delicious cheeses and fried zuchini on the house. The pastas are excellent, but unless you are really hungry, I would get one order between the two of you for the first course.
I love the lamb chops so much that the only other main course i've had was the veal, which was very good but ...Pretty much anything you order will be very good.
I don't know if you like grappa, but their grappa, is great. If you aren't sure you probably should skip that, as it is very strong. No dessert stands out as exceptional, probably because i've been so full after the food. If you still want dessert you might want to save a few dollars and add an experience by going to a cafe in the village such as Cafe Reggio around the corner, or Cafe Degli Artisti on the north side of Greenwich, a little west of 6th Avenue.

Il Mulino is a wonderful restaurant - I would characterize it as a "man's" restaurant. I find it noisy and crowded - but yes the food is wonderful. If you can't get it, try Il Giglio on Warren Street - it's owned by the same people who own Il Mulino -but it's off the beaten path and easier to get in. I don't think it's open on weekends, however...
