Hi, Mike!
Look at www.madison-hotel.com. I have mentioned this "find" many times on this forum, as our family thought it was a great bargain... it allowed us to stay in Manhattan for around the same price that we paid in Philadelphia, and the hotel, while nothing fancy, is clean, friendly, safe, and well-located on 27th and Madison. Otherwise, you could try bidding on Priceline.

Couple of weeks ago I tried priceline.com for a Midtown South or Chelsea Hotel and ended up at the Clarion 5th Avenue for $121/night (ended up $140 after taxes, etc). But I waited too long, perhaps, and could have gotten a better deal if I'd tried a week or more ahead. As long as you're not trying for a holiday weekend, you should be OK.
