Does it have to be ON Broadway? Most of the hotels in the theatre district are on the numbered streets but may be a block or so off Broadway. There is a Marriott Marquis at 1535 Broadway (between 45th and 46th Sts) -- I have been in the lobby, restaurant, shops, common areas, etc. and it seems very nice if you like the larger, busier, chain-hotel type of place, but I can't vouch for the rooms or prices. A less expensive alternative just off of Broadway is the Hotel Edison at 228 W 47th St, but that may be a bit more "budget-minded" than you're looking for.

www.cheapesthotels.com has the midtown Howard Johnsons for only $119 a night.
You can easily afford bus fare on the difference in hotel rates.

The midtown HoJo is actually on 34th St. near Penn Station and has little to recommend it other than proximity to the station. I've stayed there when other moderately priced options weren't availabel but I wasn't overly impressed. The first respondent was correct in suggesting that you look for something on a side street just off Broadway. You can be a very short walk from the theatres (5 minutes or less) and have far less traffic noise and aggravation. I stayed recently at the Radio City Apartments (it is a hotel but many rooms have efficiency kitchenettes in the room). It's on 49th a block from Broadway and the location was fantastic. The rooms are a tad old fashioned but very clean and comfortable - it should be under $130.

The Milford Plaza isn't too bad, it's not right on Broadway, but on the street parallel one block west around 47th St or so; it's very convenient if you mainly want to walk to theater shows. It's nothing fancy, but ok -- rooms are pretty small but decent as they redid them a few years back. Decor is rather dark (gray). It's quite large, lots of tour groups but has a decent lobby and not too bad in-house food. They run a lot of promotions so I'd guess it's maybe $150 or so. Never heard of The Time myself.

Radio City Apartments seems to operate on word of mouth and repeat business - no web site or advertising. Their # is (212)921-9321 The lobby is much more plush and elegant than the rooms but I think it's a great value for the $. We paid $119 in August for 2 people/2 beds and were upgraded to a 1 bedroom (1 bed in BR and a futon couch in LR/Kitchen area)when we chose to come a day early and the room we'd reserved wasn't available yet. The location can't be beat and it was surprisingly quiet for a lower floor (we were on the 4th floor).
