NYC hotel help please!
I am planning to go to New York for five nights in May and need some hotel suggestions. I will be flying into LaGuardia airport and I have a tight budget. I originally planned 100$ per night but after looking at the booking sites that seemed impossible so I'm already up 150$ per night. I will be spending at least three days in manhattan so I would like to stay there if possible but that seems like a fat chance. Any suggestions?
I already found a Clarion hotel near LaGuardia for 150$ per night. Are there trains for me to connect to Manhattan, and how long would it take me to get there?

If you don't mind switching hotels, try bidding on Priceline. You could start off bidding for all 5 nights but shorter stays usually have better results. Go to biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com
Are you traveling alone? If yes, try looking on Radiocityapartments.com
Staying near LGA is less than ideal but some of the hotels near there are near subway stops. That Clarion get dreadful reviews on tripadvisor

Look on quikbook.com and see if any of the hotels fit your budget. The Park South is sometimes around $150. Very small rooms but ok.

If you can up your budget just a bit more, you should look at the Carlton. E29th, I think. Or somewhere around there. This was a few months ago, but I found 180 on Travelocity. LGA to NYC is a hike and you're going to wind up spending a pretty penny on cabs, not to mention time and energy. If I were you, I'd find the extra $ and stay in Manhattan. Also try Murray Hill Suites and The Park South.
There's also the Gershwin but you get what you pay for there. From what I understand, it's safe but not the cleanest place in the world.

Try the Grand Union Hotel on E. 32nd St, the rates are well below your $150 budget. It is a smaller hotel, but close to everything and at night it is a quiet area of the city.
Also check www.hotels.com for more ideas.
DO NOT stay out at LaGuardia if you want to visit the City, you are going to be traveling a long way at night or will need to take a taxi. There is no public transit in the area of the hotels there.
Have a great time while you are here.

Have you checked www.craigslist.org for vacation rentals in New York? Since NYC hotel prices staretd going through the roof I have taken to looking there and have been able to find a place at rates lower than most Manhattan hotels.

I would recommend checking the Travel Inn - see www.newyorkhotel.com for that and other possibilities.
Though, it will be a challenge at this late date for five nights in May.
But, you could get lucky with Priceline.

I had great luck using Priceline.com a few years ago. I got a really great hotel in a good location in Chelsea that was under minor renovation. The renovation did not impact our stay at all and we stayed at a much better hotel than we could have otherwise afforded. I agree that staying near LGA probably isn't a good idea. It's not convenient and not a nice area. If you have any connection to a university or club with reciprocal memberships in NYC you might check into those. They are usually pretty reasonable. Good luck.

"... will be spending at least three days in manhattan " Where will you be for the other 2 days?
Maybe you should up your budget for those 3 days and then move out of the city near your other venues for the other 2.
