NYC Hair cuts for men?

Yet another question for our NYC trip. My son, senior in high school, has had the same haircut basically his entire life. Well, he is really wanting something young and fresh (he feels the pressure from his older sister to get with the program before he leaves for college!)Anyway, can anyone recommend a good salon that can help him. He is pretty shy and would like them to just do it and not ask many questions because he doesn't really know what he should do. Thanks again.

Astor Place is a cheap, very funky no frills barber shop populated by NY hipster types and very popular with NYU and other college students. A high school kid looking for something interesting will feel very comfortable there.
This is so not a salon, and it may look a little sleazy to you, but its been around for ever and has a huge following

flit, I don't think they have a website--shocking. Even the "official website" link on the nymag site isn't to a working site

Some stylists have their own sites--take a look at the unimpressive interior and exterior photos here! http://www.joseatastorplace.com/

I would recommend someplace hip. Try Frank's Chop Shop on the Lower East Side.

Back in the day, I had my hair cut at Astor Barber, and it was very cutting edge. I have it on fairly good authority that they have not lost that edge in the intervening 20-odd years. BTW, back when they were giving me a new-age crewcut, they were cutting David Bowie's hair, which even impressed my dad (b. 1928).

Sorry, forgot to add that they cut both men's and women's hair.
