NYC downtown dinner
Help! Suggestions for a nice dinner in SoHo or the village for Friday night around 10. Taking my husband to NY for his first visit (I used to go there for business a lot). Riding the Staten Island Ferry at sunset and am looking for a fun, different dinner suggestion. Tried Lupa, they are booked. Something noteable would be nice. Not Nobu, he's not into sushi. Having Mexican at Rosa Mexicana the next night. Something that won't break the bank. Not formal or stuffy, maybe Italian, maybe not.

try Babbo. They keep a few tables open in the bar area, and you can eat at the bar w/ the regular menu. I went without reservations on a Sat night near x-mas, after they told me they were packed I asked about Lupa, they said it would probably be easier to walk-in at Babbo. We waited about 1 hour. It was well worth it.
Although expensive, not terribly so. They aren't snotty, and the waiter even suggested we share an appetizer. Also, you can get wine by the quartino, if you don't want a bottle. Jacket not required (which endears it to my husband). Personnally, I would splurge on whatever Prosecco cocktail they are serving at the bar.
Have fun, I'm jealous.

Since you are taking the Staten Island Ferry, why not go for some history and head to Fraunces TAvern, which is a short walk from the ferry. You can start there with a drink, or stay for dinner. There are several good restaurants in the area. Harry's would also fit the bill, just off Wall at Pearl St.
If you are up for walking there are a couple of restaurants at the South St. Seaport and you can sit outdoors and enjoy the city going by.
A little further up is Chinatown and then Little Italy. If you like asian food, then a must is Peking Duck, for Peking Duck of course, it's the best in the city there. And then up to Little Italy for some wonderful deserts at any of the cafes on Mulbery St.
Have a great time while you are here.
