NYC again -- Michelangelo or The Library?

Here's the gig. My daughter and I try to celebrate big birthday years with a weekend trip together. This year, it's October in NYC (she lives in Washington, I live in CT). We've decided that we are ready to spend more than "basic budget", and stay in a nice, interesting, boutique-type hotel. We're leaning towards either the Michelangelo or The Library. Your advice?

We'll be there Friday thru Sunday: plan to eat well, see a play, go to a spa, maybe do the GV or Chelsea food tour mentioned here recently. All input gratefully received!

Michelangelo is a class operation. It would be my choice.

Michaelangelo is great. Not much hustle and bustle in the hotel. No real restaurant and the breakfast buffet was disappointing but we loved the people and the room.

Found this review of the Library here:

Message: Hi Fodorites-
We just came back from a no-kids weekend in NYC and wanted to highly recommend the Library Hotel in Midtown (41st&Madison;i blck from Grand Central)Aside from the free latte and cookies 24/7 and lovely (included)breakfast; the staff was helpful and the room was luxe (keeping NYC space considerations in mind)It's easy to hail a cab from there and Grand Central subway is around the corner We had a summer weekend special of $199.

There are some 20 threads mentioning this hotel (mostly older). Many of them mention construction across the street on Madison Ave. Don't remember if it's still going on.

Have you checked tripadvisor.com for recent reviews?

I have not stayed there but I saw a show on it on the Travel Channell and it looked geat. Each room has a theme and is booked accordingly. I also believe the rooms are numbered ala dewey decimal system. It seemed fun. Where ever you go enjoy the time together. My mom moved to Maine while I am still here in Ct. So we meet and go places together and they are some of the best times of my life.

Thanks for the thoughts, mrsbu. It's so easy to take our moms for granted, and not know how much we miss them until it's too late.

When we moved from England to the US, my mom took it hard. But over time, she came to love her annual visits to the US -- and so did we. Very special memories for all of us.

Especially this week, remembering all the families devastated by 9/11 -- carpe diem: tell your loved ones how you feel, and make time to be together.
