NY: What to do in 1 day..

I am going to NY with a friend and we would like to know of the best way to get around the city (as well as most economical). Rental car?

In addition, where are good, economical places (nice areas) to stay in the city? Bed and Breakfasts? Hotels? Shared housing?

What can we do in 1 day that would give us the best "tour" of NYC?

Kai

1.Get a good subway map. The subways are safe during the daylight hours. Use them.
2.Check out 5th Avenue between 42nd St. and 57th St.
3. Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It's on 5th ave. in the low 80s.
4. Go to the World Trade Center observation deck. The WTC is at the southern tip of the island.
5.If it's a weekday, check out Chinatown during the day.
6.Go to Times Square after dark.

A car is the worst possible way to get around. With such limited time it's almost certain that your trip will, by necessity, be focused on Manhattan itself anf yes, the subways are an excellent choice. A one day unlimited pass os only $4 per person - a great bargain. Economical is a relative term in NYC - a hotel costing less than 4150 per night is genrally considered to be in the moderate range - under $100 is usually (not always) a "European style", meaning a private room with shared bath. It;'s ag reat way to get a decenty hotel at an affordable price and I can recommend it - with only one day you'll be in the room only to sleep. As for what to so with only one day... I respectfully suggest that you use the search function of this forum to read past threads on this very topic. It come up quite regularly and reading these will enable you to focus your question more specifically.

Some things to do:

1) ride the Staten Island Ferry
2) walk down Wall Street
3) have a pizza at Rays
4) do people watching in Central Park
5) shop at Macys
6) catch a Broadway show
7) wander around Times Square (you can even do this after dark now!)

PS: if you're into art collections, just spend the entire day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art -- the best collection of art in the US, possibly in the Western Hemisphere.

Kai, don't even think about trying to bring a car into NYC. Traffic is horrendous, parking spots are hard to find on the street, and garages are ludicrously expensive. Take the subways, and walk as much as you can. NYC is a great pedestrian city. As far as things to do, it depends on what your interests are. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is certainly an incredible place if you are interested in art, also MOMA for modern art. A trip to the observation deck of the world trade center is thrilling for the the view, especially at night when the city literally shimmers and vibrates below. A ride on the Staten Island Ferry is fun, and gives you a feeling of what it must have felt like to first arrive in New York Harbor by ship. I think you can go on boat rides from South Street Seaport which is fun, otherwise South St. Seaport is just tourist shops and a mall. If you go to the Met you can stroll through Central Park afterward or down Fifth Avenue. If you go downtown to the World Trade Center, you can explore the downtown area. There's so much to see and do. What do you like to do?

You didn't say where you were coming from to spend the day in N.Y. We recently took the train from Long Island, arrived at Penn Staion, and subwayed to Battery Park where we got the ferry which took us to Ellis Island. It was a special trip back in history and takes at least 2 hours to see everything. Back to Battery Park and a short cab to Tribeca (it was way too hot to walk that day and we were on a tight schedule- we probably could have subwayed though). We had a great brunch at "Bubbie's" and checked out the Tribeca Grill owned by Robert de Niro, but it was closed. We ended up back at Macy's for a little shopping.
The hop-on, hop-off bus is great for getting around the city, too. For inexpensive places to stay try the discount accomodations booking services.
Enjoy!

Take the train to Brooklyn Heights and walk over the Bridge-- you'll see the skyline, statue of liberty, empire state building, maybe the staten island ferry-- walk through city hall park down to the world trade center and go to the viewing floor at the top of one of the twin towers. Take a train up to Washington Square Park and walk around the village a little or just walk up fifth avenue to the plaza hotel/central park-- this is a very full day for an active person but it can definitely be done. At night check out Times Square and maybe see a Broadway Show.
