NY to Seattle, WA - best driving route in January?

I did the drive from Albany to Olympia, WA in June. You REALLY don't want to drive the northern route in the winter. 90 goes through lots of very remote areas. The wind is very strong across the plains states, too. It was a beautiful drive (we also were relocating so it was one way) in nice weather so maybe you can do the northern route some other time.
