Portland Maine is very compact yet has many attributes of a much larger city, including great restaurants, a couple of microbreweries, shopping and a wonderful art museum. If you have access to a car, you can tour the beautiful coastline and lighthouses nearby. But even if you're staying in town, there's plenty to see for a couple of days

I vote for Portland, although its is a close call. Both Portland and Burlington have nice pedestrian - cobblestone areas for walking and browsing. Portland has a pretty working harbor (lobsterboats), neat islands to hop to, and chowda from sidewalk vendors. Burlington has a beautiful lake with ferry rides.

Providence is bigger and not so quaint, I think, but I haven't been there in a while.

The good news about Providence and Portland (I believe), is that they both now have train service to Boston. If you get bored in either place, you can go Boston.

All, please correct me if Portland - North Station isn't on line yet.
