Rural North Carolina. Hmmm, you probably won't need a tuxedo and it would help if you liked NASCAR. Did you ever see the TV show dealing with Mayberry, North Carolina? Baaaaaarneeeyyyy!!!!!

Both are small North Carolina towns on the water. Both are undergoing development. Edenton has a nice little historic area; E City's downtown (a few square blocks) always looks a bit seedy to me. Not unsafe, just threadbare.

Why these places?

Gordy-Thanks for the info. You're reaffirming what I was afraid of!

Tarheel-thanks for your response, I had a sneaky suspicion about Elizabeth City. My husband is a physician and there is a position in Elizabeth City. We currently live in Winston-Salem and love it, but would like to be closer to the ocean. Neither one of us know anything about that area except what we've seen on the chamber of commerce website & of course they make it sound good. Edenton sounds pretty, but very small. What do you mean by "under development"?

Cathy,

If you live in Winston-Salem, why don't you take a weekend and drive over there and see for yourself??? Don't you think first hand observation is a little better than advice from complete strangers?

By devleopment I meant growth although nothing on the scale of Raleigh/Durham. Retirees. Families fleeing Chesapeake sprawl. Some 2nd homes. Waterfront property was (may still be I don't know) still relatively affordable.
E. City has a really beautiful Main Street of restored victorian homes and a fledgling art community.

E. City is about 45 minutes from the Outer Banks but keep in mind that last 30 miles on Rt 158 is the same pipeline the rest of the NE is using to access the beach. Edenton is an hour and a half from Manteo. I know less about it than EC but from frequent visits I find it very pretty and very small. Signs of same kind of growth...new subdivisions, golf courses, etc.

If you all love Winston Salem, I'd say a move to either of these places might be a bit of a hard sell. If I had to pick, I'd chose Edenton.

NC fellow,

Not to worry, of course I would check out a place first before coming to a conclusion. We only found out about this position a couple days ago & will
check it out as soon as time allows. It's great to hear opinions about places but nothing can substitute seeing it with your own eyes. Thanks for the response.
