FYI: Our local news report last night in San Diego stated you are not to pack food or drinks in your checked bagage as certain foods can set off bomb detectors.

If this is old news, excuse the post, but I had not heard this before.

Man! What would you be eating or drinking that would set it off? Yuck!

I read this too! I have packed a bunch of food for my husband and I 9snacks that is) and for our baby. I am going to take my chances and keep it in my bag. It will not fit in our carry-ons with all our other stuff. They said especially don't pack chocolate or cheese. Who packs XHEESE in their suitcase?

The folks going to Disney that can't afford to eat there!!

Maybe it's the wrappers--foil lined that could be the problem, not the food itself. Right??

So I can't put a sloppy stuffed crushed pizza in my luggage?

A friend of mine recently flew oversees, checking a huge suitcase packed with nothing but food items, including cheese - no problems. On her return flight, she packed chocolate to give to people at home - again, no problems. Is this a new rule?

They are not banning food in bags. I think they are just trying to tell you that some foods will set off the bomb dectectors thus making it necessary for them to search your bag. If you want to improve the odds of them staying out of your bag, don't pack food ... especially chocolate apparently.

Debbie - no it is not the wrappers. Chocolate and cheese can sometimes set off explosives detectors. I would hate to have my expensive luggage destroyed by a bomb disposal squad because of some candy or cheese. This is not terribly likely but could happen. Put it in your carry on or leave it home.

While I have read some 'funny' responses; I was planning on taking coffee in my suitcase/checked bag this evening, so that I can be assured of a hot cup in the morning. The condo I will be going to of course has no groceries and I will be arriving late. Hmmm... debating on still taking it along.

I recently flew to my mother-in-law's house for Thanksgiving. I packed a prestuffed turkey and two pumpkin pies plus a container of whipped cream in one suitcase -- two pounds of mashed potatoes and some candied yams in a casserole in another -- and took some cranberry jello mold and the green bean casserole in my carry-on. In my purse I kept the rolls and the gravy.
I had no problems, except the poorly pressurized luggage hold made my whipped cream turn very runny.

sorry, forgot to mention that the clumsy luggage handlers managed to spill some of the eggnog out of the punchbowl in the larger suitcase.

My jello mold survived the trip fine!

I believe a jello mold can survive a nuclear blast.

Under no circumstances should anyone ever attempt to carry a fruitcake in their checked luggage. Recently a 24" hard-side bag with a 2.5 pound fruitcake in it was checked at the Knoxville, Tennessee airport. When one of the luggage handlers tried to throw it on the conveyor belt to the airplane's luggage hold, the bag broke the belt and dented the frame of the device that moves the bags.
The flight was delayed while a new conveyor was brought in, and the handler had to be carried a way on a stretcher when he wrenched his back trying to pick up the bag.
As one on-looker was reported to have said:
"Oh, the humanity!"

The fruitcake thing, well, it's been done to death. While I liked the whole thanksgiving meal in the suitcase post, I thought the fruitcake post was truly lame.
