BuffaloGirl, I wasn't referring to you! I was responding to several posters who quoted that old saying.
Isn't it amazing tho that when you want to get their attention, the staff looks every where but at you, yet when you do something they don't like, they're right there to comment! And those self serve soda stations bug me anyway - they cannot possibly be profitable, IMO. So much waste!
CChaplin: did you leave a two cent tip? Tell me it ain't so!

i was in line when this was going on and i think you failed to report to these readers how the man you were with behaved. he was the one screaming and yelling at the woman behind the counter. she simply asked if you remembered who you paid. he yelled to the woman that he paid her. the woman had walked away when the payment was to have happened so i find it hard to beleive he paid her. neither one of you could say who it was that you paid. he was ranting and screaming so at this woman that he should be the one to be ambarrased. maybe the owners saved themselves from another similar situation with the 2 of you since you now say you will not go back and you should not. no one should help themselves to anything without asking. also, if this was your first time in this restaurnat you should have asked first. go take out your pms on someone else and then tell the truth to readers. restaurant owners get taken apart in delicatessans and i think they have every right to give it back to nasty, loud, fresh, miserable customers.

Salami, I’m glad you posted and explained how the situation appeared from your perspective. I guess that in my astonishment at being yelled at not once, but twice, by the restaurant owner, and then having the guys at the register deny that I had paid for the coffee, I wasn’t quite aware of my father’s behavior. Although he was clearly trying to defend me, I’m embarassed that it came across to you – and obviously to the restaurant owner’s wife – that we were rude or miserable. I can assure you that we’re not, but we were (and still are) appalled by the way the restaurant treated me.
To those of you who question my intentions in posting my original message, it was really quite innocent. I was under the impression that these forums were used to share information and opinions about travel and dining. I’ve learned that one wades into dangerous territory – particularly first-time posters – in doing so, and I’d be reluctant to share information or opinions here again. It’s been a strange experience, first at the restaurant in one of my favorite cities, and then in these forums. I do appreciate the many thoughtful and insightful comments that have been made.
