Niece coming to NYC this weekend, any ideas? I live here but don't often show it to kids too often.
Well I am looking for all types of ideas. I want to give my niece a taste of everything. Will probably stop by the met for an hour. Will check out the Japan Society and Asia Society and see if anything new is going on. I know the options of zoo, natural history museum. If you know any special events that are going on that make this ideal this weekend let me know.
Food, can you think of any fun restaurants? My niece is 10. Is serindipity still fun?
Will probably wait on line for turned back tickets to the Lion King. Will probably walk up and down 42nd street and buy her something when we don't get in

If it's nice weather, how about a walk in Central Park with a ride on the carousel? I used to love doing that when I was little! In fact, I still do!!

QC GREAT IDEA!!! My nieces mother will be moving around the city with her older daughter,,,MTV would be the ticket. Do you think they will do that show on the weekend?
Michele, What do you think about renting bikes in the park. ...too risky?
I don't think my niece will go for just visiting the park. She is only 10 and they live in the country. I don't think she is drawn in by the Central Park people see in movies the way someone older might be. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I'm too old to know when that show is on for sure ( I think M-F afternoons) but I would bet cash money you niece knows EXACTLY when it's on. Keep in mind the studio is on the 2nd story and you will have to go across the street to see anything. But hey- that's exactly where the giant Toys-R-Us is.

She might enjoy the zoo in central park - or the laser show at the plantarium. If she's into fashion she might enjoy going to the fasion institute at the Met - it's hard to tell with kids that age - some are mad about clothes - others don;t care at all.

There's a great show your niece will probably love called Cookin' at the Minetta Lane Theatre - it's sort of a Korean version of Blue Man Group and Stomp - non-verbal, visual, funny and energetic - it played at the New Victory last winter - all the nine and ten year olds I know loved it . As did quite a few adults.
A stop on the East side(Serendipity) might include Dylan's Candy Bar . . . Or even cooler - the Lower East side and a trip to Economy Candy - twice the candy for half the price. A stop at Katz's deli and Laboratorio de Gelato would be great fun.
The downtown Jekyll and Hyde (7th Avenue and Christopher St.)is easier to get into than the 57th St. one - and the food is just as bad . . . but kids love the talking statues and corny jokes . . .

The last few times we have been to NYC my daughter went to TRL. You can tell if they are taping by a crowd on the street below. If the kids get in the crowd below the MTV window (not across the street) they get their faces on MTV as the camera pans the crowd down there periodically.
If they make a sign it'll be easier to recognize on TV... and make sure someone have the TiVo or VCR taping the show.

A lot of people talk about this American Girl Doll Place midtown. If your niece likes those dolls, she willprobably like this. If you want to do a bike ride, I'd suggest the path that runs along the Hudson River, It goes from Battery Park all the way up to Riverside. The lower part is very pleasant with great views of the STatue of Liberty and some nice stops along the way (Wintergarden, Hudson River Park, etc.)

The Statue of Liberty is still not open.
I suggest Dylan's Candy Store...what kid wouldn't love this place?
Chinatown would also be an unforgettable experience, if you think she can handle the hustle/bustle.

If your niece doesn't have easy access to a big city, I suggest going up the Empire State Building. My nieces LOVED it because the biggest building where they live is about 6 stories and they weren't used to being up so high. It also gave them a great overview of how Manhattan is laid out.

Total Request Live (I think) with Carson Daly... it's an MTV show the kids really like.
The studio is in Times Square. It's on the corner and on the 2nd floor. I am not sure which corner it's on but it's easy to spot.

Yes - the Hudson River Park bike path is well marked and easy, smooth riding - but since the weather is slated to be good this weekend, it will be a bit crowded - but it's a great "city" activity - and a wonderful view of the the river. You could bike all the way up to Chelsea Piers, which are from 16th Street to 23rd Street. Different piers have different activities - bowling, ice skating rink, field house with gymnastics, rock climbing wall, batting cages and an extreme skate board park - which I'm not sure if it's open yet for the season. Check the website at www.chelseapiers.com All those activites can add up to big bucks, and might not really be the best way to show off NYC, though.
The American Museum of the Moving Image is great for kids - but since it's a bit of a schlep to Queens, and she hasn't been here before, you might be better off spending your time in Manhattan. You forget how incredible the sights can be to young kids who haven't spent much time in cities.
If you're going to Chinatown or downtown - try stopping for "Bubble tea" - the tapioca balls dropped into flavored drinks - every 10 year old I know adores bubble tea. The American Girl store is REALLY popular with lots of 10 year old girls - do a search here for more info. Bring money. another good website for events is www.citysearch.com and also www.gocitykids.com and of course, time out ny. Good luck!
