It's probably safer and easier to ride bikes along Hudson River Park than Central park. Central park is hilly, there are roller bladers, bikers, joggers, some moving quite quicky and with the hills and turns, its harder to see what's coming. Hudson River Park path is flat and straight. I've taken my kids down there many times when they were younger than your niece.

Chinatown and little Italy have a very festive feel, especially during nice weather.

There's also a chain of stores called Girls Props. They sell very inexpensive, but trendy jewelry and other accessories. Young girls love these stores. There's one in Soho in Prince St, near W. Broadway (I think the original), I know there's another on e. 8th st near University Pl.

We visited NYC when our daughter was nine. She liked most everything, but the big hits were Ellis Island, Empire State Building, Museum of Natural History/Planetarium, Central Park and walking around Times Square in the evening.

Thanks everyone. I hope you keep contributing. I am reorganizing my closets. Niece coming is very organized for a ten-year-old. I need her to continue to look up to me. . Should have started this process last week for that!

Keep the suggestions coming, I can't stop to read them all at the moment but I am going to come on tonight with her and make a selection. Thanks again everyone.

Incidentally if you look at fodorites hotel reviews, this niece reviewed the Hyatt on Kauai with me. Her mother never lets her come up alone to "the big scary city", so I am so excited

She will look up to you, but my guess is it will not because your closets are organized- but because you are taking time to spend w/her and are so excited about it, and because you such a cool aunt (aunts are always cooler than moms).
BTW- I hesitate to add anything to this busy weekend, but my kid's (11 yr old girl) favorite thing was the Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum (I always spell it wrong and the spelling police come speeding after me on this forum every time!) Very entertaining couple of hours for us. She'd see lots of famous people that way...

Madame Tussaud's another excellent choice just phoned my sister with that one. She will be touring the city with her other daughter (teen) and old friend who lives here also.

Sarah,

I've had my 10 year old nieces come to visit me, so I know the angst (and excitement)
American Girl store was a big hit, but only if she's into the dolls already. There's a Hello Kitty (Sanrio) store on 42nd st that is great for inexpensive gifts.
Shows: My niece really wanted to see 42nd street and loved the spectacle. Throughly Modern Millie was another choice we considered.
Museums--depends what she likes. For a niece that loves music, the musical iinstrument section of the Met was great. Costume collection there also a favorite, and maybe the Egyptian collection. Ask what she's studing in school--Asian or African artifacts might be of interest if she's been reading about them.
Museum of the Moving Image (in Queens) is something I've taken my nephews to (a little older) and loved. My niece was not interested.

My daughter took her 1st grade class to Museum of the Moving Image, and they all had a great time, but she thought it would be better for 3rd graders (10year olds?) (She lived in Astoria at the time.) If the weather is nice go roller blading in Central Park if possible. But then, she just might love shopping in Bloomies with her Aunt Sarah....depends on the kid and if she's a 10 year old 10 year old, or a 15 year old 10 year old. (Anyone who has ever had a daughter knows what that means)...if she speaks up and speaks her own opinion "go with the flow"!

Well thanks to all of your suggestions we had a great weekend.

Saturday we went first to Museum of Natural history for the butterfly exhibit, we then meandered but she grew bored so we wandered in Central Park. I was surprised; she comes from the country so I assumed the park would be boring for her. No, she wanted to climb the rocks and explore the park. I think we were in the park longer than the Museum.

Next we went to Serendipity.... 1.5hour wait. We gave them our names and went to Dylan?s candy store, big hit!!! After 45 minutes and a considerable dent in my wallet, we took the subway to Chinatown, skipped Serindipity. You had to see her eyes light up when I mentioned that we would take the subway, priceless.

Joe's Shanghai and no we did not have the dumplings. I have had them before and my niece wanted lomein so I did not press. I did introduce her to scallion pancakes and sesame chicken. We got back in the cab uptown and stopped on Broadway to look at the lights and toysrus. Huge ferrous wheel here as well as one game she had been looking for but could not find. I let her self out playing hula hoops, trains, Kinex, wandering until I had to go home. I think she was hula hooping for a good 40 minutes.

Sunday,
My find...We slipped into children's tour at the Met. The focus here was on Indian gods and goddess statues. It was short, sweet and I could not pull her off the tour. Not something I think I could have said if I decided to show her the met on my own. SCORE!!!!

Next we went to Central Park zoo; main branch then the petting zoo. This is a great substitute if you don't want to hall it all the way up to the Bronx. I could not believe that this was my first visit and I only live some 14 blocks away. Next we happened into the Greek Parade. We bumped into George Stephanopolus and kitty Carliyle. Not sure if they are both Greek but they were both near the parade. Last, we went home as my niece was coming down with something and we watched movies.

All in all it was a wonderful weekend. Thanks to all of your great suggestions I think I showed my niece an excellent time. At one point when we were in Central Park my niece said to me, Sarah aren?t you so glad you live in NYC ? She also showed me the city I don't get out to see enough. So I suppose we did something nice for each other.
