Nice spot for lunch near the White House?

Looking for suggestions for a nice lunch spot--no chains and would love something in the Mom and Pop category if such a thing exists. Almost any type of food will do, but would like something that is walking distance from the White House gates!

How much do you want to spend? Mom and pop places don't really exist in that part of downtown DC, although this place"

could fit the bill. For something more upscale, Old Ebbitt Grill is also a great choice.

Mike T is absolutely right on both counts, and I certainly cannot come up with any other mom-and-pop places nearby. However, if Asian-inspired cuisine is of interest, then Teasim is another home-grown possibility -- their "Lafayette" location on Connecticut Avenue is more or less just across the part from the White House: http://www.teaism.com/ Be aware that this is a place where you place and pick up your own order at the counter, and find a table.

Doesn't exactly fit your description, but I'd go to the Old Ebbett Grill. You'd probably be seated next to Hillary or McCain.

You could also do lunch at the top of the Washington Hotel - greatest view around.

Occidental Grill is nice.

Glad it worked out, Randy. Hope our cold snap didn't ruin the trip.
