Nice San Diego Restaurant

sorry, i forgot to post this under California the first time... A good friend is moving to San Diego on her birthday, and 'd like to give her a gift certificate for a nice San Diego restaurant where she can go with her boyfriend to celebrate once she gets there. Any ideas for a nice, romantic place that would be a good intro to San Diego for an east-coaster? Somewhere 2 people could eat for $100-150 would be great. Thanks!

i would suggest the Marine Room in La Jolla - right on the ocean to the point where waves will lap up underneath the windows - incredible view. the atmosphere is upscale, food is good and they can get out for under $150 with a decent bottle of wine included.

And on your original thread I suggested George's at the Cove, also in La Jolla. I haven't been to the others mentioned so I can't compare.

I would go with George's on the Cove in LaJolla.
In fact Delta has a $148. W/E fare to SAN from DFW so I may be there Saturday evening.

While I love George's at the Cove, at night there is no view because it's dark. I suggest the Prado restaurant in Balboa Park - sit on the terrace.

CircleK,
You should visit and try all + Cafe Pacifica; Chive; Fio's; Laurel; and the great Thee Bungalow in Pt Loma.

Barbara,
My heart is broken re: Fio's!
Actually, I tried to buy two $148. w/e getaway seats from dfw on the Delta web site, input all the info, but they sold me only one seat. OK, went back to get the second - none left - so we have to cancel.

If your friend likes steak, Donovan's in La Jolla is wonderful.

How about Mr. A's? On a recent trip to San Diego I see it is opened and operating again.(if it was closed.) It is a wonderful view of the city. An oldie but a goodie.

diann, Mr A's changed owners several years ago and is completely different. It is now owned by the same guy (blocking on his name!) who owns Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe. The new name is Bertrand's at Mr A's. (Bertrand Hug!) The food is great and the view is as fantastic as ever, but the prices are high. They have two sittings so if you want to sit around and enjoy the view, go later.
