Nice but cheap hotels in Union Square

Stay in SF from Sunday-Tuesday and want to stay in Union Square. Don't need a luxury hotel, looking for something nice, but inexpensive, what are the best options?

Most of the hotels right in Union Square are expensive. If you don't mind staying a bit outside Union Square, the Hotel Carlton gets great reviews on Tripadvisor and has very affordable rates.

Another good choice would be the Baldwin Hotel.

The Grant Hotel is another choice.

Hello Lauren, if you post what price you are looking for you will get some responses I am sure. Everyones budget is different so what is considered cheap or inexpensive by one Fodorite might be considered too much by another Fodorite.

Priceline is often a good option in San Francisco, if you're willing to make a non-refundable reservation and not know with absolute certainty which hotel you'll get until you hit "buy". I would suggest you bid only in the Union Square East area.

I've stayed here a couple times. It's OK. It's just a couple blocks off Union Square.

Last week I stayed a night in the Larkspur Union Square Hotel for the really great price of $86 for a queen room(I booked it through Quikbook.com, but the hotel's website had it for $90) It was surprisingly nice - the room was bit on the small side, but quiet, clean and comfortable with nice decor. Free wine in the evening and coffee in the morning (also a coffeemaker in the room). The hotel is near the corner of Sutter and Powell, just one block north of Union Square, so it's a great location.

Union Square EAST. There's also Union Square West, which can be a little too far west.

The Mosser on 4th street just off Market. Kind of boutique, kind of hostel. Great prices, especially if you don't get private bath. The hall baths are really clean and well kept.

Always puzzles me, why Carlton? Boring residential area. Good bus connection, though. 7 blocks away from Union Square - is it still Un. Sq. area?

I agree with the priceline idea. If you can get $75 bucks for the Westin that is a great deal. Good luck!
