I agree with Dayle about the end of August being a great time to see Yellowstone. We have been there about three times the week just before Labor Day and have found it quite empty compared to earlier in the month or in July. It was also very easy to find a campsite (but I know you aren't interested in that).
Our favorite activity in YNP is geyser watching. It can become addictive and you will find that there are actual "geyser groupies" who follow the schedule in the visitor center to add to their life lists. It's kind of like birders and sometime the wait is just as long to see a particular geyser erupt as to wait out a special bird in a mountain meadow.
Best place to stay for the geysers is at Old Faithful Inn. Even if you don't stay there, you must go inside.
We have also been to YSP in early June several times. Once it snowed on us, but usually the weather is good and the Park is relatively uncrowded.
As far as the Grand Tetons are concerned, I've stayed at Jackson Lake Lodge several times and love it. The views are extraordinary. If you stay in a motel in town, you will not have the same experience. Also, Jenny Lake Lodge is fantastic but also quite expensive.

Myer,
You, sir, are a man after my own heart!! Having just returned from one glorious sightseeing trip, you are already thinking about the next one.....WAY TO GO!!! My husband and I returned from Zion, Bryce and Capitol Reef not even two weeks ago and I have been on the web ever since looking into our next adventure!! It drives him crazy that I'm like that, but what the heck....it's my passion!! It's so good to know that I'm not the only one out there who feels that way!
Loved reading your trip reports and thank you for all the great tips that helped with planning our vacation. Several years ago we went west for the first time and saw Yosemite. It was love at first sight!!! Never thought I'd see anything that beautiful again. Then we did Yellowstone and Grand Tetons two years ago and guess what??? Love can be fickle!! Although it could never diminish our feelings for Yosemite, we really enjoyed our time at Yellowstone and GTNP. This time around it was Utah and its amazing parks. Well we finally figured out that you just can't compare any of them. Each has its own unique beauty and majesty. Trying to compare them would be like comparing apples to oranges. Both taste great, but they definitely don't taste the same!!!
Go to Yellowstone!!! You won't regret it and your life will be so enriched by it.
By the way, next year is our 30th anniversary and I want to plan something really nice. We were so blessed to be able to celebrate our 25th in Hawaii (which was a dream come true for us), so I'm thinking this time around....maybe Alaska or a Glacier National Park/Banff/Jasper combination (leaning more towards the Canadian Rockies for some reason....not sure why). No matter where we choose, I've always found the homework is half the fun....right???
Dream on, friend.

Diane,
The best time to start looking at more trips is just after returning from a great trip and you're psyched.
I just wish I had started this NP stuff 10 years younger.
Now I'm trying to squeeze different types of trips into a calendar.
Too many things to see. Can you take it with?
It looks like NY (and another taste of Broadway on Broadway) and Boston is Sept.
Then maybe Charleston & Savannah in the spring or maybe a bit bigger with Seattle, Vancouver & Victoria.
Tough!!!
